Regularly check your Ford’s leaf spring and its accessories for wear. Once the leaf spring is cracked or worn out, it can cause further damage to your ride and to anything that you’re towing.
If you decide to take the lead spring off, make it a point to inspect the shackle links for wear. If you notice a round ring of wear matching the shape of the nut, this isn’t something you should worry about. But if the shape is oval, then it’s time to have your shackle link replaced.
How can I prevent center breakage of the leaf spring?
When it comes to the preventive maintenance of leaf springs, it is crucial that you tighten the U-bolt nuts. Retightening should be done after the vehicle’s first-day run when the spring has been replaced or fixed. As some surfaces bend down a little after a first-day’s drive, retightening the u-bolts takes up any slack, making it possible for the spring to stay tight for a considerable period of time. After the first-day retightening, it can be done again on your new or repaired springs after 500 miles, 1000 miles, and on the right intervals stated by the manufacturer of the springs.
The leaf springs of my Ford are positioned under the axle. Do I still need to secure them with u-bolts?
Yes, no matter where the leaf springs are installed (over or under the axle), U-bolts are always necessary. These horseshoe-shaped metal rods are fitted around the axle and are secured to the metal plate resting against the leaf springs. The u-bolts keep the leaf springs flushed against the axle, making them able to bear the weight of the cargo.
I am installing a new Ford leaf spring. Any tips on how I can properly install the U-bolts so they can be properly tightened?
It is a good idea to use torque wrenches in determining whether you have correctly tightened the u-bolts or not. Avoid using impact wrenches as they have the tendency to over or under torque the bolt. Make sure, however, that the torque wrenches you’re going to use are all in good condition and with no loose threads. Also, check that both the threads and contacting surface of the nut are free of dirt and freely turning.
What will happen if I fail to torque the leaf spring u-bolts correctly?
If you fail to provide the needed torque to properly tighten the u-bolts of your leaf spring, it can lead to either over-torquing or under-torquing—neither of these is good for the leaf springs. Over-torquing usually results in u-bolt failure and damage of other suspension components while under-torquing damages the spring. Make sure you use the right tool for torquing the bolts. You should also consider the U-bolt material and the recommended torque for such.
Would you recommend adding leaves to my existing leaf springs for better suspension performance?
Adding leaves to the existing leaf springs may just do your ride more harm than good as it can overload not only the suspension component. A properly made leaf spring comes balanced, with leaves graded in length in such a way that each leaf takes its fair share of the load. The distribution of stress along each leaf is determined by the length of the leaf plus its thickness and radius. Adding leaves to the spring without considering such balance will surely upset the equal distribution of stress and cause damage to surrounding suspension components.
Can the condition of the leaf springs be checked without a need to lift or to crawl underneath my Ford?
Yes, you can spot a sagged leaf spring by taking a look at your vehicle’s body or doing several measurements. If the fenders seem to appear lower to the ground than they were before, that could be a sign that you have sagged springs. It would be more accurate if you measure the clearance between the vehicle’s chassis frame and the garage floor. You can also measure the distance between the floor and the wheel rim. Any tilting of your Ford’s body or any significant difference in the measurements you’ve obtained compared to the original dimensions may indicate problems with the springs.
