King Pin Repair Kit: A Simple Installation How-to

Linked to your vehicle's steering mechanism, king pins carry a lot of weight. They wear out overtime, so they need to be replaced in order to avoid hassles on the road. A king pin repair kit should give you all the parts you'll need for the job.

Needed tools and materials
- King pin repair kit
- Vehicle jack
- Tire iron
- Jack stands
- Screwdriver
- Torque wrench
- 3/8-inch ratchet
- Soft hammer
- Brass drift
Getting ready for the task
Use the vehicle jack to raise your automobile off the ground. Let your truck or SUV sit on the jack stands for security before removing its wheels. Use the tire iron to remove the wheels from your vehicle.
Accessing the king pin
The king pin can be found in between the steering knuckle and the I-beam. To access it, you need to remove the king pin bearing cap and bushing first. Loosen the bolts that hold the cap before you remove the spring retainer from the king pin bushing. If the cap is firmly affixed, use a screwdriver to pry it loose.
Mounting the king pin
Use the brass drift and hammer to remove the king pin from its position. Apply light pressure on the hammer until the king pin comes out. Once the old part is removed, slide in the new king pin from the king pin repair kit. Re-install all the bolts and other parts that you've taken out.
Tips
- Before you could remove the worn-out king pins, you need to disconnect the brake caliper first. You can use a line wrench to do this.
- Do not apply heat to the I-beam to expand it and to remove corrosion. Although applying heat to I-beam is a popular advice, doing so will only damage the part.
- It's best to buy king pins by the kit. A king pin repair kit contains all the things you'll need for the installation.
