Tips on How to Use and Maintain the Jeep Grand Cherokee Hitch
The hitch in the Jeep Grand Cherokee enables you to tow trailers conveniently, but it is also the first part to go if something goes wrong when towing. Because of this, it is important for the Jeep Grand Cherokee hitch to be properly used and maintained to reduce wear and avoid problems in the road.
If you are thinking about using the hitch in your Grand Cherokee, here are some things to consider:
- Do not tow anything that is too heavy for your truck to pull.
You'll be surprised to know that a lot of damaged hitches are caused by trucks pulling things whose weight are simply too much. The latest Jeep Grand Cherokee models are capable of pulling up to 7,500 lbs, and anything beyond that will put strain on the hitch as well as on the engine and frame.
- Ensure the hitch is secured before pulling.
As a rule, check if the hitch couple is locked and secured with a bolt or locking pin before starting the engine.
- Make sure to use the correct size and type of coupler for your hitch.
If the coupler does not fit the ball on the end of the trailer, the trailer will be unstable during towing. This in turn, would lead to problems in steering or, even worse, cause the items the trailer is carrying to fall off. In addition, make sure that the coupler is in good working condition.
- Do not attach a tow rope or tow strap to the hitch for extended towing.
Tow ropes and straps are designed for emergency use; they are sturdy enough to pull your Grand Cherokee out of a ditch, but they will start to fray and snap if pulled on for an extensive period of time. In addition, unlike a standard towing coupler, the clevis utilized in most towing ropes can damage the hitch. Use tow extension bars instead as they are specifically designed for use with extended towing.
- Make sure that the hitch is level with the coupler and trailer in general.
A trailer that is level with the hitch greatly reduces the risk of jackknifing or similar accidents. If you are using a tow bar, make sure the tow bar is parallel to the ground. If the tow bar or trailer is mounted at an angle, this could lead to braking problems.

With that in mind, here are some helpful tips to consider when installing a Jeep Grand Cherokee hitch:
Tip #1: Match the hitch to the vehicle and the item being towed.
Before installing a hitch in your Jeep Grand Cherokee, you need to be certain that it is rated for the vehicle being towed. Hitches are classified according to class, which in turn is based on the size of the vehicle it is meant for and the amount of weight it can support. A Class I hitch, for example, is meant for cars pulling cargo that weighs no more than 2,000 lbs, while Class V hitches are for RVs and heavy-duty trucks that can support 18,000 lbs or more. Most Jeep Grand Cherokee models are designated to Class I hitches although some models can also be customized to a higher class. Be sure to refer to your user manual to determine the class of your truck.
Tip #2: Don’t install a hitch without lifting it with a jack.
There won’t be enough clearance for you to install a hitch safely and properly without jacking it up first. Lift the truck with a hydraulic jack, and secure the frame with a pair of jack stands on the designated jack spots. Under no circumstances should you support the truck with the jack; unlike the jack stands, the jack is not meant for prolonged support of the vehicle and will slip with the slightest movement.
Tip #3: Make sure the truck and trailer is on a flat, stable surface.
Do not install the hitch on a sloped or uneven surface as any more than a few degrees would cause the truck or trailer to move and result in injury. Also, make sure that the truck is set to park and the front tires are chocked.
