Save Your Hyundai Santa Fe Hitch from Damage with These Tips

Under normal weather, your Hyundai Sante Fe hitch can last long without requiring any replacement at all. However, driving through harsh weather is inevitable. That is why you need to provide your hitch with proper care and maintenance. To care for the hitch and keep it in optimum working condition, you can form a habit of doing the following tips:

  • Clean the attachment points of the hitch to remove accumulated dirt and grime.

Your car's frame is constantly exposed to unwanted debris, dirt, grime, and road salt. Over time, these contaminants may settle on the weld nuts or bolt holes of the hitch, and eventually harden, leading to corrosion in the weld nuts. To prevent rust from getting worse, all you have to do is to fetch a wire brush and an ample amount of spray lubricant. Apply the lubricant and let it soak for a while before scrubbing the bolt holes. Just repeat the steps until the bolts can be twisted freely.

  • Free the hitch from rust by sandblasting.

Getting rid of rust on your vehicle's hitch can be done through sandblasting. This also creates a clean slate if you ever plan to repaint the hitch. Just make sure that the surface of the hitch is grease-free and has dried completely before applying the paint. Remember that you can't paint over the corroded surface, as this will not last for long. If you want to make the color stay on longer and prevent rust from forming again, apply an oil-based paint within 24 hours after sandblasting the metal frame.

  • Check the frame periodically.

It's typical for your car's metallic parts to rust over time, but this doesn't mean that you don't have any control over it. In fact, you can prolong the lifespan of your hitch by detecting early signs of damage and fixing it right away. One way to do this is to examine the component every now and then. Remove the hitch on a regular basis to clean it. Once a month is good enough to check if rust has formed on the part. Make sure that you keep the hitch lubed to prevent corrosion.

Going out of town involves carrying large items such as a cooking rig. Such equipment can be too big to fit inside your car, especially if you have a lot of passengers inside. For this purpose, a Hyundai Santa Fe hitch would be of great help. Setting up a hitch on your vehicle doesn't require expert skills nowadays. All you have to do is to carefully follow the instructions and take these tips into consideration:

Tip #1: Identify the hitch appropriate for the load you want to carry.

Different hitch classes built for varying weight limits are available in the market. You must first assess what types of items you plan to carry using the hitch. This assessment helps you determine which class matches the estimated weight of these items.

Tip #2: Collect the tools you will be needing for the installation.

Going through the instruction manual will give you an idea of the tools to be used for the hitch installation. This can include a torque wrench, safety glasses, hammer and chisel, inspection mirror, etc. It's ideal to have these tools ready before starting the installation to prevent interruptions during the procedure. This way, you can finish it quickly and make the necessary adjustments to the hitch if necessary.

Tip #3: Prep the hitch by trimming or cutting during the trial fit.

Although most aftermarket hitch kits are vehicle-specific, there may still be some minor modifications that you may need to apply. When you do the test-fit of the hitch, look at all the bolt holes and see if everything fits properly into place. Be cautious when cutting or trimming the hitch; you wouldn't want to trim too much and make it more unfit for your car.

Tip #4: Use duct tape to keep the bolts in place.

You can either ask a friend or simply use some duct tape when placing the hitch frame on your car. Since the bolts are only hanging in the frame, it may be difficult to keep them in place while you set up the bolt ends through the drilled holes in the hitch. The duct tape will restrict the bolts from popping out, and make it easy for you to secure them tightly in the frame.
