Easy Maintenance Tips for the Honda CRV Hitch

Trailer hitches for the Honda CRV are built to be tough, but they do require a bit of TLC from time to time. Regular maintenance coupled with proper use will go a long way in ensuring that the hitch will provide you with optimum service for more years to come. Here are some maintenance tips you may want to consider for your Honda CRV hitch:

  • Do not use the hitch above its intended purpose and weight class.

Hitches are designated with a specific class for a reason; they are only capable of pulling a particular amount of weight and anything beyond that will put excessive strain and damage to both the trailer and trailer hitch. So before hooking up a trailer to your SUV, make sure that it is within your trailer hitch's class rating. Typically, trailer hitches for the Honda CRV — which are rated at Class 3 — can safely pull up to 6,000 lbs of weight, although it's still best to refer to the user manual that came with your hitch.

  • Clean dirty hitches as soon as possible.

If you've just slogged through mud or drove through the desert with your trailer, take the time to wash the hitch thoroughly once you get home. Aside from being unsightly, mud, sand, and road grime can also be the source of corrosion.

To clean the hitch, you can use clean, warm water mixed with your preferred car shampoo and apply it using a sponge or a soft cloth. Take extra effort to scrub the corners and caps in the assembly as these places are where dirt often accumulates. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.

  • Keep an eye out for corrosion.

This is especially important if you use your trailer hitch to transport boats or live near humid environments. Rust can quickly spread in the metal components of the hitch and, if left unattended, cause these parts to deteriorate over time.

Take time to inspect the hitch assembly, particularly the corners and mounting points, for any signs of rust. Minor rust spots can usually be sanded off, but severe corrosion may most likely entail replacement of the damaged component or of the entire hitch assembly.

  • Lubricate the hitch regularly.

Applying grease and penetrating oil to the hitch's mounting bolts and moving parts has many advantages. First, it will prevent the bolts from squeaking especially when driving through rough terrain. Lubricant will also help keep corrosion at bay and ensure that any moving part of the hitch assembly works smoothly.

Like most crossovers nowadays, the latest Honda CRV models come with pre-drilled holes at the rear, which can be used to support most trailer hitches, making installation of these accessories much easier to do at home. But even if you have a specialized hitch that requires additional drilling, installing one would still not be that difficult especially if you have prior skills and experience in installing and replacing parts in your vehicle.

Adding a new Honda CRV hitch will take only 1 and a half to two hours of your time and does not require special equipment outside of a wrench set, hydraulic jacks, and a hole saw. In this guide, we'll toss you some tips that can make installing hitch an easier one:

Tip #1: Match the hitch with your SUV.

There are thousands of trailer hitch models available online but not all of them are compatible with the CRV. Hitches rated for bigger and heavier pickup trucks, for example, may be next to impossible to install on the CRV without extensive modifications and may greatly affect its steering and suspension. Typically, hitches with up to a Class 3 rating can be fitted on the Honda CRV, although it is still best to look up the manufacturer's recommendation.

Tip #2: Secure the vehicle before starting.

Installing the hitch will need the SUV to be lifted in order for you to access the holes and mounting points for the hitch assembly, so make sure that the vehicle is secured properly to prevent injury. Place a pair of jack stands on the frame, and engage the parking brake. We also recommend locking the steering wheel with the seat belt to prevent the wheels from accidentally pulling to one side.

Tip #3: Make sure to remove all the necessary components carefully.

Some of the parts that you will have to remove include the rear bumper, side trim panels, weatherstrip seals, and the kick panel. Be extra careful with the weatherstrips and trim as these are quite fragile and may get damaged from excessive force. In addition, make sure that all the hardware that were removed were accounted for and kept in a safe place to prevent them from getting lost.
