Thick Head FlangeHeaders, or otherwise known as exhaust manifolds, are aftermarket parts that enhance the performance of every car. This kind of upgrade matters a lot to high-performance drivers because of its ability to increase speed. However, it's inevitable at times that this gets worn out especially after years of use. If you suspect that your Chevrolet Tahoe headers are heading to becoming problematic, then here are some troubleshooting tips that you might want to keep in mind to help you diagnose the problem.
Leaks are inevitable especially when there are cracks on the headers. Aside from it being a nuisance, it can also be harmful once it enters the passenger cabin because it's detrimental to the health. Inspect the exhaust headers for signs of cracks. With your Chevrolet Tahoe on park or neutral on a level surface, lean over the fender panel that's close to the exhaust manifold. Take note of clicking or popping noises. These are caused by a cracked pipe because it makes this kind of sound with regularity every time that the cylinder fires. If you feel slight vibrations in the headers, it's also an indication that there is a leak.
If you smell gas, it's an indication of carbon emissions. You have to keep in mind that a cracked header creates a strong smell of unburned gases because it wasn't able to pass through the catalytic converter. Ask your buddy to rev up the engine a couple of times to check if there's black or dark gray smoke coming out of the exhaust.
Keep in mind that a leaking header is very dangerous for both the environment and the passengers since the exhaust gases weren't able to pass through the catalytic converter. It can even affect the performance of your Chevrolet Tahoe because it will produce less backpressure and decrease its fuel efficiency. Plus, it can even ruin some of the exhaust parts, which can be a costlier replacement. The best thing to do is to set regular inspections with an expert mechanic to help you out whether or not you must replace the headers with new ones.
The headers, or commonly known as the exhaust manifolds, are built to improve the speed of the vehicle. Having one installed will significantly affect the road performance of your Chevy Tahoe. However, it's usual for parts like this to deteriorate over time. Replacing it with a new one is not exactly pocket friendly, but you can always do proper upkeep so that the Chevy Tahoe headers will last longer than expected.
It's important to keep the exhaust headers clean at all times because this will greatly increase the longevity of this part. If you leave it covered with dirt, grease, and rust, it will affect the performance of your Chevy Tahoe; worse, the exhaust manifold will completely give up on you. Before cleaning it, make sure that you let your engine cool down because the headers can get extremely hot. Apply lacquer thinner all over the exhaust header and scrub it with a brush. Keep in mind not to use water because it will only damage it.
Exhaust headers are cast iron, which absorbs water. If you get the manifold soaked in water, you will only end up ruining it. You have to be careful when driving in deep puddles or whenever you get your automobile washed. Do precautionary measures to see to it that your headers won't get soaked in water. But if water still continues to flow, you must activate the engine to discharge water that's accumulated inside. Do this for about ten minutes. Other than that, you can apply anti-rust oil inside the muffler.
The discoloration of the exhaust headers can be a real issue. If you could barely get the engine to start, then you have to close the choke valve and rev up the engine again. Remember to open the valve after you have started the engine because if it's closed for a long time, it can damage the engine and the headers. It's also quite inevitable for the exhaust manifold to get dirty because of the different road conditions, so make sure to get this cleaned regularly and restore it to its original condition. If it can't be cleaned or restored, there's no other choice left but to replace it with a new one.
