The grille assembly isn't just all for show. In fact, it also keeps rocks, dirt, and road debris from getting into the engine compartment. The grille is used as some sort of a frontline shield. As the grille protects the engine from the elements, it also lets air flow in to help cool the engine and also for fuel combustion that generates energy. When the grille breaks, you have the option to repair it. Here's how you can fix a plastic Nissan grille assembly:
Difficulty level: Easy
Things you'll need:
Step 1: Clean the grille assembly using dishwashing detergent and hot water. The mixture should be 2 teaspoons detergent combined with 8 ounces hot water for a concentrated blend. Scrub the grille using a toothbrush. Rinse it fully and let it dry completely.
Note: The surface has to be free of grease, so the solvent cement will bond properly.
Step 2: Check for cracks or any sign of damage on the grille. Cracks, holes, and other rough spots on the grille will be visible once dirt and grease have been removed. For the cracks and other forms of damage, use painter's masking tape to mark them.
Step 3: Pour acrylic solvent cement into the squeeze bottle applicator. Fill it halfway through. For finer cracks, use this solvent cement. But for cracks with slight gaps or spaces within the break, use gap-filling solvent cement. Since this is thicker, it can fill the openings between cracks. To keep the surrounding paint or finish on the grille safe, cover the areas around the cracks with masking tape.
Step 4: Push the cement near the top of the bottle by squeezing the applicator with the thumb and index finger. As you slightly release the pressure, a vacuum will be created within the container. This is necessary to keep the cement from spilling out when the bottle is tilted. To fill in the cracks, just apply a thin bead of cement. Let this dry for 6 hours.
Step 5: Use a utility knife to scrape off any leftover solvent cement. After fixing the cracks, you have to inspect the grille to see if all gaps or holes have been covered. If there are holes or cracks, fill them with cement and leave them to dry as needed. You can now remove the masking tape.
Additional tip: To smooth out the surface that has been filled, you may sand it. Use 180-grit sandpaper and then finish it off with 320-grit sandpaper. Make sure that the surface is smooth and even. After this, you can now apply primer to the sanded surface or repaired portions of the grille. The coat should be smooth and even. Once the primer has settled, you can now paint the surface. Choose a paint that matches the grille's color scheme. After painting the grille, it should look brand new.
