Better fuel economy, improved throttle response, and more horsepower and torque—these are only three things that you can get when you install high-performance headers on your vehicle. Headers are actually improved versions of exhaust manifolds; they have convoluted circular tubes that are of the same length. When you install this component, you must expect to have better scavenging and less backpressure that eventually makes your engine’s performance better. Also, having quality headers helps your muffler and catalytic converter in tempering exhaust noise and creating cleaner emissions, respectively. Thus, if your manifolds have been in the service for more than five years, then you must consider replacing them with headers. You might try one from Gibson, but let us first see if its product is worth it.

We tested this component on a Subaru XV Crosstrek and a Toyota FJ Cruiser, and here is what we have to say:
Thumbs up
- Because all of the installation hardware was provided, connecting the headers to the cylinders and the cat-back was considerably straightforward.
- The component looked visually good with its shiny outside appearance made by the nickel chrome plating. The tubes were solid, and the critical parts where the tubes were connected were thick enough.
- We ran the engine of the XV Crosstrek and the FJ Cruiser at high rpm in order to see if exhaust emissions would be improved. The exhaust gases became a bit cleaner, and the muffler became quieter.
- During the thirty-minute ride with each vehicle, we noticed a considerable 10-point improvement in horsepower and torque. It was not that much, but every point would definitely count. In relation, throttle response also improved, the vehicles ran quieter, and the engines were stronger.

- The installation of the component became a little difficult because some parts of the tubing were rubbing with the heat shield. We had to cut a few inches off the shield in order to get the needed space for the headers.
The verdict
Gibson headers are actually considered top-notch, so trying them will surely be worth it. Both vehicles received a bit of horsepower and torque increase as well as an improvement in throttle response. Installation issues are actually based from experience, so better have a professional handle that job for you if you are not a DIYer. Of course, purchase the right part for your make, model, and year, and that can never be stressed out much.
