GMC G2500 Fuel Tank Problems and Ways to Identify Them

Your GMC G2500 fuel tank supplies fuel to your car's engine, making it an essential part of your vehicle. When you notice a decrease in your car's performance, then it's probably time to check on your vehicle's fuel tank. To help you identify troubles related to your fuel tank, here are a few tips you can try:

Fuel gets contaminated

You car cannot run on contaminated fuel; well, it can but it might stall after a few meters. Fuel contamination is one of the most common fuel tank problems encountered by drivers. Some of its symptoms include a rough idle, loss of power, stalling, and premature failure of the fuel pump and fuel injection. When you start noticing these signs, it's best that you check your fuel tank immediately.

Failure in starting the vehicle

If water gets into your fuel tank, then the most probable result is the occurrence of water in the fuel lines, especially when the car is in use. If water is allowed to settle and freeze in the fuel lines, then it may cause failure when starting the vehicle or worse, sudden stopping of the car while you're driving. When this happens to you, make sure that you remove the water immediately as it may damage the fuel lines as well.

Clogged fuel injectors

Some old vehicles still have fuel tanks made of galvanized steel. When water enters the tank, it settles at the bottom. Because of this, corrosion may form over time and damage the fuel tank. Moreover, the rust from the tank may get sucked into the fuel lines and gum up the fuel injectors. To confirm if your fuel tank has corroded, inspect the tank visually for signs of rusting or flaking.

Slow fill or restricted gas filling

Some vehicles, like the 2005 Ford Mustang, have an inherent flaw that prevents proper filling of the fuel tank. This defect prevents the tank from taking in more than half a tank of fuel. You may also find it odd that the fuel tank is slow to fill. Another sign is the repeated shutting off of the gas station's hose pump. However, this problem is not limited to Mustangs. It's also common in some vehicles, and is usually caused by a faulty vapor venting system inside the tank.

Through the GMC G2500 fuel tank, your truck can store enough fuel needed by the engine system. It's built in a way that allows it to resist vibrations while the engine operates. Over time, your vehicle's fuel tank may get worn or punctured, causing various problems such as stalling and premature fuel pump failure.

  • Perform your maintenance routine outdoors.
  • Always remember that gasoline is a highly toxic substance. When too much gasoline is inhaled, it might disrupt the normal functions of your body system. It's recommended that you do your fuel tank maintenance tasks in an outdoor setting for open-air ventilation.
  • Exercise precaution when cleaning the fuel tank.
  • Since you have to wait for the gas to run almost-empty before you can clean the fuel tank, it's important that you have a siphoning kit. Never siphon the gas out with your mouth. You need to have your own siphoning kit when cleaning your car's fuel tank. It's easy to find and doesn't cost much unlike other cleaning tools.
  • Change your fuel every six months to keep the fuel tank clean.
  • Fuel, specifically diesel fuel, can be stored for ideally six months to 1 year. However, this time frame changes depending on your fuel tank's condition and the atmospheric temperature in your area. If you don't use your vehicle frequently, make sure that you still change your fuel every six months to avoid damaging the fuel tank.
  • Get rid of rust before it spreads out.
  • Keeping the fuel tank half full and allowing dirt to remain inside it are the keys to a worn, rusty fuel tank. In order to prevent corrosion in the fuel tank, it's best that you clean the tank regularly. In addition, you may use a rust-prevention product, which is available in most auto parts stores. Coat the tank with safe rust-prevention products such as polyresin, fiberglass resin, or Vinylester.
  • Use only thermosetting polymers like epoxy when repairing rust holes.
  • A punctured fuel tank doesn't necessarily need to be replaced. Depending on the number and size of the holes, the fuel tank may be repaired to restore its good condition. To fix the rust holes in your fuel tank, you can use a high-temperature, high-pressure epoxy. It's best to look for an epoxy that can endure up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit and can resist an impact of 3,000 lbs. per square inch. Just sand the damaged area, and seal it using a metal piece with epoxy applied on its back. Press the metal down onto the rust hole to cover it.
