Problems with the Ford Tempo Fuel Tank and the Reasons behind Them

Every problem in your car needs to be addressed immediately to avoid further damage in the other components as well as to prevent the risks of accident from increasing. Just because fuel tank problems are not very common doesn't mean you can take them for granted. It is important to take note of the issues that may arise with a faulty fuel tank and the problems that causes them.

Gas tank leaks

If you notice a leak in your gas tank on one of your inspections, this could be a sign of a rusting tank. This usually occurs on the tank's exterior under the straps that keeps the tank in place and holds it to the body frame where moisture is most likely formed. If the rusty part isn't too big, using sealing putty after thoroughly removing the rust from the gas tank can solve the problem. Another possible cause of leaking in the gas tank is a fracture at the fuel return lines. Problems like this would require replacing your car's broken fuel return pipe assembly with a new one.

The tank fills slowly

Although some cars have design flaws that greatly affect the process of properly filling up the fuel tank, this problem could also be caused by a failure in the vapor venting system inside the tank. When pressure builds up as liquid rushes into the tank, it becomes hard to put gas in the fuel tank. This problem usually occurs on most modern tanks with a different kind of vent system. Another possible cause for this problem is a damaged tube or crushed gasoline. That is why it's important to pay close attention to your car's fuel tank to avoid the hassle of slow gas flow.

Other issues

Car issues like rough idle, stalling, premature fuel pump and fuel-injector failure, and loss of power may also be caused by problems in your car's fuel tank. Fuel contamination is one of the possible culprits for these problems which can be solved by removing the gas tank from the vehicle and flushing it of its impurities. Meanwhile, if you experience flaking in the inner lining of your fuel tank and clogging in the fuel line, filter, and pump, this could be caused by the amount of biodiesel used in your vehicle.

The fuel tank plays an important role in keeping your car in good shape. Since all fuel tanks were engineered for safety and performance and fuel tank problems are not very common, car owners tend to be too lax in caring for their fuel tanks. But just like any other car component, fuel tanks are also susceptible to rust, fuel contamination, sensor issues, and other problems. Here are a few tips on how to keep your fuel tanks in good shape.

  • Check for damages
  • To keep your Ford Tempo's fuel tank in good condition, it would be best to do a regular inspection to check for leaks or road damage. Take a good look at the metal units to check for defective or damaged seams and corrosion or rust. Aside from that, the mounting hardware should also be inspected for tightness and other forms of damage. If problems are suspected, do an immediate inspection so that you would know whether the damage is repairable or if the tank needs to be replaced.
  • Clean your fuel tank
  • Cleaning is always an important part of any maintenance process. Make sure to keep your car's fuel tank clean at all times because this will help maintain its good performance and even prolong its life. Get rid of sludge from your Ford Tempo's fuel tank as soon as you spot them during your regular inspections. With the right cleaning solution and the proper tools, cleaning your vehicle's fuel pump can be simple and relatively easy. Just take note of a few extra precautions when cleaning your fuel tank to protect the environment and to avoid damaging your tank as well.
  • Always drain it
  • Get rid of bad gas and drain your fuel tank to keep it in good shape. If your fuel is already years old, contaminated with water, or full of solid debris, then it's necessary to drain all of the fuel out of your tank. There are cars that have a drain cock where you can easily drain the fuel tank. Just make sure that you have a proper container positioned under the valve that's ready to catch the draining fluid.
