A Brief Guide to Installing a Jeep Fuel Pump Correctly
It can be quite challenging to install a jeep fuel pump. Follow the steps below in order to easily install this part on your Jeep.

- Jack
- Ratchet
- Hammer
- Socket set
- Wrench set
- Long punch
- 2 jack stands
- Tubing wrench
- Phillips screwdriver
Step 1: Find a level surface to park your jeep at. Make sure it's a safe place with loads of space for you to work with when attempting to work on your vehicle, like your own garage or driveway as well as an empty parking lot.
Step 2: Relieve your fuel system's fuel pressure. If you're unaware of how to do this for your jeep, just take off the pump fuse from the fuse box or panel found under the engine compartment or dashboard of your ride.
Step 3: Siphon the fuel out with a fuel siphon. Start your engine and leave it on until you run out of the remaining fuel, making it stall. Reinstall your fuse and disengage the negative battery cable from your battery.
Step 4: Find the pump. For in-tank fuel pumps, there should be an access point for it underneath the trunk or back seat. To locate this door, you need to remove the carpet and seat. Unscrew this door with a ratchet and socket or screwdriver.
Step 5: If your in-tank fuel pump lacks an access door, raise the back of your jeep by jack and support it atop jack stands then remove the straps holding the tank with a ratchet. Lower the tank slowly by using a jack to support it.
Step 6: Remove its electrical connector plug then take off the fuel lines connecting it to the cam lock holding unit. Use a special cam tool to rotate the lock tabs loose.
Step 7: Lift the cam off of the tank but don't lose the ring gasket. The cam door contains both the fuel pump and the fuel sending unit. Remove the pump from the assembly and install the new pump from there.
Step 8: Put back the fuel sending unit assembly then lock the cam. Put back the tank, lower the jeep, and reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery. If you're working via access door, install the access cover then reconnect the negative battery cable.
Step 9: For in-line pumps, you need to raise the vehicle with a jack then support it safely with two jack stands for good measure. Follow the fuel lines coming out of the tank in order to find the inline fuel pump and remove it.
Step 10: To avoid potential line damage, use a wrench as a backup and a tubing wrench to undo the nut. Take off the old fuel pump and install the new pump in its place. Lower your jeep then reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.
The fuel pump is a crucial part of your vehicle's fuel distribution system. If it fails, you won’t be able to get your jeep running properly or at all. Once your fuel pump gains enough mileage, it will lose pressure, leak, or supply an irregular fuel flow, thus necessitating immediate replacement.
