The Chevy Silverado 1500 made an impressive feat by bagging Motor Trend’s 2007 ‘Truck of the Year’ and ‘North American Truck of the Year’ awards less than a decade from its debut. Its history may be shorter than trucks from Ford and Dodge, but Chevrolet’s focus on innovating performance and design elements makes it a worthy competitor in the segment. To learn more about this truck, let’s go deeper into one of its components—the fuel pump.
The fuel pump is a mechanism that initiates the fuel delivery process. This module is found inside the fuel tank of a Chevy Silverado 1500. Its primary role is to deliver pressurized gas to the fuel injectors in the car engine.
The fuel pump module is made up of components housed in a plastic canister. A fuel pump sensor is attached to the module which communicates fuel levels to the truck’s gas gauge and empty level lights on the dashboard. The only way to access the fuel pump on the Silverado is by removing the gas tank.
Automotive fuel pumps work in two ways—they either push or pull fuel towards the engine. This part is responsible for drawing out fuel from the tank, filtering out residue, and pressurizing the fuel for combustion.
Chevy Silverado 1500s are fitted with an electric fuel pump located inside the gas tank. Unlike mechanical fuel pumps, which pull fuel towards the engine, an electric fuel pump injects fuel into it. Here’s how it works.
The electric fuel feed pump siphons gas from the fuel tank and pushes it through the fuel filter to remove any tank residue. The fuel is delivered to the metering pump which spins it around to pressurize it. Once it reaches the right amount of pressure, it flushes the fuel out of the pump and pushes it into the fuel line.
There have been three generations of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, each with parts of varying sizes. To help you find the right fuel pump for your truck, simply input your truck’s year, make, and model into our website’s search engine.
The cost of replacement fuel pumps varies depending on your truck’s year and model. OEM replacement parts typically cost anywhere between $50 and $1,100. These are sold individually and may come with or without a fuel sending unit and a pressure sensor. Replacing your truck’s fuel filter is also recommended every time the fuel pump is replaced.
Extreme caution is needed during the replacement of this part. Due to its location inside the gas tank, there is a risk of igniting fuel and causing a fire hazard. Accidental dumping of fuel on organic material may also pose health and environmental risks. We strongly recommend going to a trusted mechanic to have the part safely replaced.
An electro-mechanical component like the fuel pump is bound to wearing and failing over time. When this happens, you may experience problems that affect the drivability and fuel economy of your truck. If you’ve experienced one or more of the following signs, we recommend getting your truck checked by a professional.
A common sign of a faulty fuel pump is a sudden loss of power, specifically when driving uphill or while hauling a heavy payload. This happens when the fuel pump is unable to meet an increased demand for fuel. As a result, the engine will shut down under stress. Replacing the fuel pump will ensure that the amount of fuel delivered to the engine is consistent and its pressure is properly regulated.
Your truck’s engine requires the right balance of air and fuel to function efficiently. As the fuel pump degrades and fails to work properly, the amount of fuel pushed into the engine may no longer be proportional to its air intake. When this happens, the check engine warning light will switch on.
As the fuel pump pressurizes fuel, you should hear a quiet hum from your truck. Whirring noises and sputtering could be a sign that there’s something wrong with the fuel pump. Sputtering at high speeds could be a sign that the stream and pressure of the fuel injected into the engine is not consistent. It could also be caused by damaged components in the pump module or contaminated fuel inside the system.
