The Malibu is Chevrolet’s entry in the midsize car market. Originally introduced in 1964 as a high-end take on the Chevrolet Chevelle and relaunched as a front-wheel drive vehicle in 1997, it combines sleek looks and the latest technologies to let you stay connected while on the road.
Not only does it look good and offer high-tech options, but the Chevrolet Malibu also offers reliability. An U.S. Initial Quality Study by J.D. Power in 2019 showed that the 2019 model enjoyed the lowest rate of issues reported among midsize car models.
However, even a vehicle model as reliable as the Malibu can get recalled for replacement of faulty parts. Some 2018 Chevrolet Malibu units got recalled for an issue with their fuel pump, while a less severe technical service bulletin (TSB) identified a problem with the pump’s roller follower pin.
Recall involving the Chevrolet Malibu fuel pump
Back in May 31, 2018, GM recalled a slew of vehicles, including the 2016-2018 Chevrolet Malibu. The car manufacturer discovered a flaw in the joint that attaches the high-pressure fuel pump’s outer housing to its mounting flange.
As detailed in Product Safety Recall 18268, the fuel pump supplier didn’t do a good job of welding the joint. The poorly manufactured part could develop cracks from the vibrations produced by a running engine and driving the vehicle.
If the cracked joint breaks, the fuel pump could separate from the flange and vibrate inside the engine compartment. The resulting erratic oscillation could damage the high-pressure fuel line attached to the fuel pump, leading to the risk of a fuel leak and subsequent fire in the engine bay.
GM offered to replace both the faulty fuel pump and the fuel line free of cost.
TSB involving the Chevy Malibu fuel pump roller follower pin
Weeks before GM issued the above recall, the car manufacturer also issued a TSB regarding the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu. The #PIP5610 bullet covered the roller follower pin of the model’s fuel pump.
Some Malibu owners reported that their car’s engine didn’t deliver enough power while speeding up, hesitated, or responded sluggishly. After looking into the matter, GM found that the roller follower pin moved laterally until it “walked” out of the fuel pump.
The protruding pin could hit the nearby cylinder head. While the knocking activity didn’t make much noise, it would still delay the ignition’s timing during acceleration, leading to loss of power.
GM recommended replacing the faulty roller follower pin.
How much does a Chevrolet Malibu fuel pump cost?
A replacement fuel pump can go for anywhere between $25 and a whopping $2,010. The cost reflects the pump’s manufacturer. You can get individual pumps, assemblies, and replacement kits that include other parts.
