The Chevrolet Astro fuel pump makes high-pitched whining noise when the vehicle's running. What causes this problem?
The fuel pump is probably punctured or dented. If that's the case, it has to be replaced immediately. For electrical fuel pumps, damaged solenoid windings can also cause the fuel pump to whine. Defective solenoid windings create high resistance in the pump motor's primary circuit, making it difficult to deliver fuel. This is common on Chevrolet Astros with high mileage rates. Another cause of fuel pump noise is a clogged filter. Have it checked and cleaned before doing any replacements.
The Chevy is stalling even if the fuel tank is full. Should the fuel pump on a Chevrolet Astro be replaced when this happens?
The entire fuel system has to be diagnosed first before getting a Chevy Astro fuel pump replacement. The car is stalling because the injectors are not receiving enough fuel to run the engine, so the fuel lines should also be checked. For electrical fuel pumps, a defective relay and a blown fuse could be the cause of the problem. Usually, the fuel pump will overheat and stop running for approximately 20 minutes before it starts working again. This is one of the first signs of damage. If the wiring and fuel line problems are ruled out after a thorough inspection, then it's time to remove and replace the damaged fuel pump.
Will replacing the stock Chevrolet Astro fuel pump with a high-performance unit decrease fuel economy?
No. A high-performance Chevrolet Astro fuel pump will not yield any negative effects to the fuel economy. It's all up to the fuel pressure regulator to return all the excess fuel to the tank and preserve the Chevy's fuel mileage. The pressure will remain at a normal level unless the fuel pressure regulator is adjusted and cranked up. Just make sure the high-performance unit is compatible with the factory specs of the Chevrolet Astro before doing the upgrade.
