Depending on power rating and range, fog lights can cost between $20 to $200. More modern lamps like LED lights and high intensity discharge (HID) xenon lights can be more expensive and can cost as much as $600. HID and LED conversion kits can contain additional components and special casings, and they can be more steeply priced.
What are the most common misconceptions about fog lights?
Perhaps the two most common fallacies about fog lights is that (1) fog lights work like headlights, only brighter, and (2) yellow fog lights give better visibility compared to white lights. The difference between fog lights and headlights is not that the former is brighter. In fact, headlights produce a bright beam of light similar to fog lights. The additional vision allows the driver to see and avoid obstacles on the road. However, headlights shine straight ahead, while fog lights create a low, wide beam of light that is angled downward. Fog lights are used in place of headlights to prevent other drivers from being blinded by the latter. Yellow fog lights have not been proven more effective than white lights. All colors are equally acceptable--it's the downward angle that makes fog lights effective.
What are the benefits of using HID xenon lights as fog lights?
HID xenon bulbs produce an additional light output that makes wider beam patterns. In a study made by the Motor Vehicle Lighting Council, up to 70 percent more light is produced compared with standard halogen. It's also been observed that blue-white xenon light has the closest color to natural daylight compared with the light produced by halogen. The more natural the light is, the less irritating it is to the eyes--and therefore, the safer it is when used during driving.
