What is the etiquette for using Chevrolet Suburban 1500 fog lights?
Fog lights should be used only when driving through thick fog. They should be turned off if there is incoming traffic--it's very dangerous for them to be left on in this situation. This is because on two-way roads wherein there are no barriers dividing the road, the driver of an incoming vehicle can get blinded by the fog lights. This common etiquette is followed for high beams as well. Fog lights should not also act as substitutes for headlights in areas that are dark but foggy, where it is not necessary to turn them on.
What does a DOT/SAE seal mean on a fog light?
The Department of Transportation (DOT) is the federal agency that delegates the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to implement and enforce vehicle safety standards. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) creates the specifications of parts manufactured for motor vehicles. These include material composition, tolerances, measurements, and performance characteristics. DOT/SAE certification is a quality assurance process administered by manufacturers on their own products. The test results are then submitted to the DOT, which stamps the certification. This is a legal requirement for all fog lights, headlights, taillights, and stop lamps.
Why do manufacturers produce yellow-colored fog lamps? Does it help that they are yellow?
There is no proven advantage associated with using a yellow fog light. It does not cut through fog better than a white fog lamp, nor does it transmit light with more intensity. In the first place, to get a yellow light, a filter needs to be placed over a white lamp, a process that lessens the lamp's intensity. A general assumption is that fog lights were made yellow as a way of signaling to other drivers that visibility is poor and thus caution them.
