Ford Mustang Fog Light Bulb Troubleshooting
Fog lights are designed to provide you with extra road visibility-and in turn, road safety-when driving through dark or precipitous terrain. When driving through thick fog, snowfall, or rainfall, working fog lights can give you a clearer view of the road as compared to your standard headlights. That being said, you'll want to keep your Ford Mustang fog light bulb working at all times. And when your bulb begins to act up, you're going to want to diagnose the problem and solve it right away. So to help you out, here are some handy troubleshooting tips to live by.
Dead bulb
Often times, a dimming fog light could indicate that your bulb is dying. Often times, having just one faulty fog light, rather than two, would be a telltale sign that your bulb is at fault and not any other component. In order to find out if your bulb is broken, remove it from the fog light and inspect it. This may require you to remove the entire fog light component, depending on its design. Otherwise, removing the light cover will easily give you access to the bulb. If the light bulb filament is blown, then that serves as confirmation that the bulb is dead and that you need a new one.
Blown fuse
If the bulb isn't the problem, then you're going to want to check the fuse box. Remove the fuse box panel/ cover then follow the instructions on the inside of the panel to find the fuse for your fog light. Remove this fuse and examine its condition. If it's popped, then you'll need to have it replaced. However, if it's still in good condition, then return it to its proper position and test the fog lights if they work then.
Faulty wiring
When both your bulbs and fuses seem to be in order, check your wiring for damage. Trace the wiring of the fog light and inspect it for cuts or damage; a worn out wire could be the culprit behind your failing fog lights. When you find wire breakage, have these wires replaced immediately.
In low-visibility driving conditions, headlights just won't do the trick. You'll want to have some very effective fog lights at hand if you'd like to safely cruise through fog, rain, sleet, and snow. Unfortunately, your fog lights can become damaged over time due to wear and tear. The good news is that you have plenty of options of how to extend the life and effectiveness of your Ford Mustang fog light bulb for as long as possible. Here are some basic maintenance tips to help you do so.
Replace the fuse.
When your fog light fails to turn on, don't immediately blame the bulb; it could be that your simply have a blown fuse on your hands. When this is the case, have the damaged fog light fuse replaced and you'll be able to enjoy smooth and reliable fog light performance there on after.
Clean the lights.
After some time, your fog light lens may become foggy and discolored. This is due to the build up of moisture inside of the lighting component itself. When this happens, the light projected by your fog light bulb is seriously impeded, and that's why you should clean your fog light lens both inside and out. Washing dirt off the outer side of your lens should be simple enough; all you need is some water/ lens cleaner and a rag, and you're all set. When cleaning the inner side of the lens, you'll have to remove the lens from the lighting component and clean it. Once the lens is thoroughly cleaned and fog free, you lights will be able to shine brighter than ever.
Seal the lights.
If you live in a place that sees plenty of rain fall, then this maintenance tips should come very handy to you. Often times, your fog lights can get filled with water to the point that either your light projection is blocked or your lights become damaged. So to protect your fog lights against getting filled with water, seal the seams of your lights with Teflon tape or silicon seal. This should keep the water out of your light, allowing your fog light to function in perfect condition.
