Honda CRV Floor Mats: Getting Rid of Stains
Your Honda CRV may be an SUV at heart, but on the inside, it might feel more like a car. The interior gives you the built-in comforts that complement the CRV’s smooth handling. But as the SUV takes you on numerous road adventures or simply meanders through city traffic, your Honda CRV floor mats can trap in grease, mud, grime, and spills, leading to some nasty stains and some foul odor. Here are some ways to remove stains, mostly on carpet floor mats, and get rid of the bad smell from these covers:
Getting rid of stains
- Frequent cleaning and regular washing (with some soap and water) can help get rid of stains easily.
- For everyday stains, you may use a carpet cleaner filled with water, white vinegar (half to one full cup), and some drops of dish detergent. Use this mixture to wet or dampen the carpet floor mats. After about 15 minutes, you can start scrubbing away the stains and vacuuming the carpet to remove dirt.
- Coffee stains can be easily removed with a little help from some glass cleaner. After wiping out the coffee spills, the dry, stained portion can be soaked with or bathed in some glass cleaner for 5 minutes. This should be dried using a clean cloth.
- For blood stains, dry laundry starch and cold water can be used to wipe them out. The paste will help lift the blood off the material. The paste could be applied several times and should be allowed to dry as needed until the stains have come off.
- Grease stains can be treated using some paint thinner that will be smeared on the stained area with a cotton cloth. The thinner will help break down the stain and allow it to come off easily. Put some salt or cornmeal on the stain and allow it to set for about an hour or even two hours until it has absorbed the grease or oil. Once the stain is removed, you can vacuum the mats.
Getting rid of odors
- Small amounts of baking soda or borax can help remove odors on the carpet. Leave this on for at least 30 minutes before you start vacuuming the carpet.
- A special air freshener spray can replace bad odors with a fresher scent.
- Some odor neutralizer can be sprayed onto the carpet to remove the foul odor.
- Vinegar-soaked towels in bowls may be placed inside the vehicle to absorb cigarette and smoke odors.
- A disinfecting product should be used in case of mildew growth or mold buildup.
