Whether it's to provide added clearer for bigger tires or to give your Jeep are more aggressive look, there many good reasons to install fender flares on the Jeep Wrangler JK. You can also add the fact that they are also easy to install. Often sold as a kit, Jeep Wrangler JK fender flares are designed to be installed onto the fenders straight from the packaging using tools found in most garages. In this guide, we'll share some tips you might find helpful when installing a new set of fender flares on a Jeep Wrangler JK.
Tip #1: Prep the area.
Instead of bolts, most fender flare designs nowadays are affixed to the vehicle through a series of adhesive tape, allowing for easy installation that does not modify the fenders whatsoever. However, the downside of this is that tape will not stick on dirty and oily surfaces, so you will need to clean the fender area first before starting. Washing the fenders with soap and water should be able to remove dust and dirt particles, although we suggest wiping the area with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol to remove any wax residue left over from car polish.
Tip #2: Pre-fit the flares.
Hold the flare against the side of the fender. Does it fit seamlessly onto the contour of the wheel well? Will it obstruct the movement of the wheels? You should also check where the adhesive tape will be placed and mark them with a grease pencil.
Tip #3: For flares with rubber extrusion seals, cut notches on the corners of the tape.
This will help the seal conform to the angles of flare, ensuring a more effective seal. This is especially important on the side of the flare next to the headlights, as this part is highly vulnerable to moisture leaks which, in turn, can weaken the adhesive backing.
Tip #4: Do not over-tighten the bolts.
The bolts and screws found in most fender flares are actually decorative in nature, and tightening them beyond the manufacturer's recommendation will actually cause the flare to crack. For the same reason, it is not recommended to use superglue or thread-locking adhesive on the bolts.
