Perhaps you parked your Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD a bit too close to the wall. Or maybe you've got yourself bigger tires for your truck and you need a set of custom flares to match. But whatever the reason may be, installing new fender flares on the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD can be quite exciting. But it's not a task that should be hurried or taken lightly. If not properly installed, the fender flares might fall off or prevent the wheels from moving freely, posing a hazard while on the road.
Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD fender flares sold in the market today have their own respective installation procedures, so make sure to carefully follow the instructions they came with. Here are some additional tips you might also want to consider during installation:
Tip #1: Clean the area.
Fender flares are usually mounted onto the edge of the wheel well through industrial-grade adhesive backing. However, the adhesive will not stick properly if the wheel well is dirty or dusty, so make sure to wash this area first. It is also recommended to wipe the area with a clean rag soaked with alcohol to remove any wax or polish residue.
Tip #2: Verify the fit.
Hold the flare next to the side of the fender and check if it is the correct type and fit prior to installation. You can also use a grease pencil to mark the areas where the adhesive backing will be placed for easier mounting later on.
Tip #3: Do not over-tighten the bolts.
Tightening the bolts beyond the manufacturer's recommended torque may strain and damage the area around the mounting holes. In some models, the bolts have more of a decorative purpose than a functional one and should not actually be used to fasten the flares to the vehicle. For the same reason, it is not advised to apply superglue or a similar liquid adhesive on the bolts.
Tip #4: Cut notches in the extrusion tape.
For fender flares that have rubber extrusion seals, cut notches on the corners of the tape to allow it to conform to the angles of the flare. This is especially critical near the headlight area, as moisture tends to seep easily through this part of the flare and weaken its adhesive backing.
