How can one identify which components of the Toyota TUNDRA exhaust system are defective?
Determining the defects of an exhaust system is easy if one knows what to look out for. Cracks and fissures on the exhaust pipes are sure signs of damage. Burned or discolored paint on the exhaust port could mean that the exhaust system is not functioning well. One should also be perceptive in listening to the kinds of noises produced by the exhaust system. If there is a rattling, hissing, or roaring sound in the exhaust, a problem definitely lies in one of its components. Holding up the catalytic converter to a bright light can help determine if it is already in need of a replacement or not. If light passes through it, it is in good condition. How long do pipes in a Toyota TUNDRA exhaust system last?
The durability of exhaust pipes is dependent on various factors. Generally, original equipment exhaust pipes that are made of aluminumized steel can last for five to seven years. But if the vehicle is driven in places rich with road salt and moisture, the longevity of these pipes is reduced to five years or less. If the exhaust pipes are made of stainless steel, they would normally last for ten years or so. Aftermarket exhaust pipes made of ordinary steel can only be good for three to five years. There are also aluminumized and stainless aftermarket pipes, which can last longer.
What can be done to at least minimize the exhaust system's risk of corrosion?
The most common and probably the worst problem with a Toyota TUNDRA exhaust system is rust. Because the exhaust is always in close contact with moisture, its risk of corroding is very high. To reduce this risk, consider utilizing an exhaust system made of stainless steel. As much as possible, drive more than 15 miles at a time as well so that there will be enough time for the moisture produced by the catalytic converter to be eliminated. Washing the underside of the car every few weeks will also be helpful in getting rid of road salt common during winter time. Salt is actually an enemy of the exhaust system because it can hasten the corrosion process.
