Main PipeRecommended Use : Performance ReplacementProduct Fit : Direct FitThe stock exhaust system of a Ford Ranger is made of tough pipes that can last for a very long time. However, if you're the type of person who uses this truck for demanding adventures that include off-road driving, then the integrity of the system is greatly lessened. Working with a replacement is an expensive and laborious task that you'd want to avoid. There are a couple of things you can do to try and extend the service life of its parts and components. The following are three ways that can keep the Ranger's exhaust system intact:
Avoid short trips.
Rust is something you'd want to protect the exhaust system from. When the Ranger is parked and not in use, moisture tends to accumulate on the surface of the pipes. Starting the car and running the engine introduces some heat on the water and metal pipes. If you kill the engine after a short running time, this initial combination of heat, water, and metal makes the accumulation of rust easier. Drive the truck for at least 20 or 30 minutes so that the system becomes hot enough to evaporate all water inside. Driving this long greatly reduces the chances of rust buildup.
Place a cover over the car when it's not in use.
Placing a car cover on top of a parked vehicle gives the vehicle plenty of protection. As far as the exhaust system is concerned, this is another sure way to limit rust buildup. A cover prevents moisture from making its way up from the ground, through the tires, and end up on the exhaust pipes. It doesn't guarantee that the pipes will be completely free from any form of water. However, the amount is significantly lessened as compared to a vehicle without a cover.
Secure loose mounts.
The components of an exhaust system are secured to the under chassis of the Ranger by various clamps, hooks, and retainers. Any loose mounts easily give the pipes damaging slack. This extra play causes unnecessary rattles and vibrations that result in disconnected ends and leaks. Inspect these every now and then to see if these are still intact. Replacement mounts can easily be bought and installed if needed.
Yes. The replacement or aftermarket exhaust system to be installed must have the "California Emissions Equipped" label. Even if the vehicle passed the emissions test, the replacement will still be considered illegal. Once an officer finds out that the installed exhaust isn't labeled, the driver will be issued a ticket and will be required to replace the exhaust system with a CARB-approved unit.
While aluminized steel is coated with aluminum oxide finish to protect it against corrosion, even a small scratch on the said finish will expose the metal to corrosive elements. Stainless steel exhaust systems are corrosion resistant all throughout, so no cuts or scratches will make them rust. They can also keep hold of their polish and chrome-like shine for many years. Though aluminized steel exhaust systems come cheaper, stainless steel units are stronger, more durable, and have higher thermal conductivity.
No, as long as the modifications done are within the boundaries set by the California Air Review Board. This department applies stricter laws and standards in approving aftermarket automotive components. CARB-approved parts have passed not just California but Federal standards as well. When it comes to exhaust modifications, Ford Ranger owners residing in the Golden State need to consider the level of exhaust noise allowed by the law, which is a maximum of 95 decibels. If the sound produced by the exhaust system exceeds that level, the driver will receive a ticket for driving the vehicle and the one who modifies it will get a ticket for making the modification. If the driver did the modification himself, he will receive both tickets for the two violations.
