The unusual loss of coolant in your vehicle’s cooling system won’t do your ride and your pocket any good. And you’ve got a more serious battle to face if that unexplained coolant loss is coupled with white smoke coming out of the tailpipe, because that means your ride is now in need of a new EGR cooler.
We don’t want you to gamble on your next EGR cooler, so we tested one of the well-known products in the market—the Dorman Diesel EGR Cooler—to see if it will deliver a satisfactory performance.

The good:
- We found this EGR cooler very easy to install without a need for modifications. We believe even those without DIY replacement experience can pull the task off in less than an hour.
- We noticed that it effectively stopped the coolant leak in our diesel vehicle.
- We also give thumbs up for the brand’s lifetime limited warranty, which we believe is assurance enough that it is free of any defect. And yes, we didn’t find any when we took it out of the box and used it.
- This is available for both square and round connections, so we had no problem mounting it even when we just found out that our ride has square connections right after buying the new cooler.
The awesome:
- We particularly chose this kit as it comes with the needed gaskets, O-rings, and hardware.
- This EGR cooler also solved the bothersome over-pressurization in our Powerstroke engine.
- Priced just right. In just a short while that it’s been installed in our ride, it already started paying for itself by reducing the vehicle’s nitrous oxide emissions, improving its fuel economy, and allowing it to pass state inspection.
The bad:
- It can only be used in diesel-powered vehicles.
- After EGR cooler replacement, it takes a while for the white smoke from the tailpipe to be eliminated, probably because of the coolant that was already dumped into the exhaust system before the task was carried out.
The verdict:
When used for the application it is designed for, which in this case is diesel engine, this Dorman EGR cooler is really up to scratch. It efficiently solves unusual coolant loss in the cooling system. And while the white smoke didn’t suddenly disappear, it did vanish slowly as soon as the coolant that leaked into the exhaust system had all vaporized.
