Best Answer:Hi Ron, I'm glad to assist you. The stainless steel brake shims, or anti-rattle shims, are used in brake systems to reduce noise and vibration that may occur upon braking. When installing new brake pads, the stainless steel shims are positioned between the brake pad backing plates and the brake caliper or piston.
