Product Q&A

Hi Mia. This is John.      I’d like some advice about installing a BS40656 Rear Main SealIn my 1999 GMC Yukon with a 5.7 L engine. I have the engine out of the vehicle, the oil pan is off, and the seal carrier is removed from the back of the engine. I have remove remove the old seals from the seal carrier and cleaned up the seal carrier in the back of the block where the paper gasket will go between the seal carrier and the block. Should I use any our TV on the paper gasket between the seal carrier and the block?  Or is it OK to install that paper gasket dry?        My main question is, do I install the carrier to the block first and then install my rear main seal into the carrier over the crank, or do I install the seal into the carrier and then slide the seal and the carrier onto the crank and then bolt The carrier which contains the seal  to the engine. Also one more thing. I know I am not supposed to lubricate the crank or the seal touches it or the seal itself where it touches the crank, but would it be OK to put some say oriole on the outside perimeter of the seal itself to allow it to slip into the carrier more easily or as designed it will it slip into the carrier easy enough? I have a 4 inch piece of PVC pipe that seems to fit the seal rather nicely and I’m going to use that to tap the seal into the carrier whether it is mounted to the block already or before I mount it to the block. Some accurate advice would be so relieving to receive. I have a day or two before this step is necessary to be performed so if you need to take your time to research this or make some calls to feel free to do so.          Within the Fel-Pro gasket set I purchased there isn’t any advice in regard to any of the above questions. Hours of searching the internet left me dizzy. Looking forward to hearing back from you   Thanks ahead of time Mia for your help.                        John B.John B.Dec 11, 2021
Best Answer:Hello! You do not need to use RTV on the whole carrier gasket, but I like to use Permatex 80062 High Tack Gasket Sealant on bottom corners where it meets the oil pan. I put the same Permatex on the perimeter of the main seal before pressing on the carrier. I then install the assembly to the block.
