Best Answer:Hi James, Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, these parts may be referred to as camshaft actuator solenoids, oil control solenoids, VANOS solenoids—the list goes on and on. But despite the different naming conventions, all VVT (Variable Valve Timing) solenoids do the same thing: apply oil pressure to activate the mechanism that adjusts valve timing.

Sometimes, cheap.....is too cheap!!
Very disappointed with the quality of these solenoids. I should have known better. They were so tempting, when your car needs 4 of these. I have a 2007 BMW X5 with the 4.8L N62 V8 engine. The valves seemed to work initially, however, they started to throw codes and the engine lost power throughout the rpm range. The intake screens were very course, which may had played a part, but I would never purchase these for a BMW engine, ever again. I purchased the "Dorman" brand, which is a little more expensive, and those ended up working good.
