It provides information about the rotational speed and position of the crankshaft in an internal combustion engine. It sends the information to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM uses the information provided by the crankshaft position sensor to determine the correct timing of the engine's fuel injection and ignition systems and to adjust these systems as needed.
