However, due to the continuous flow of high-pressure coolant inside it, the coolant reservoir can also get damaged. To avoid coolant reservoir emergencies, here are some helpful maintenance tips:
Top up your coolant regularly.
Ensuring that your coolant is at the proper level is one of the most surefire ways of avoiding cooling system failure. Most coolant reservoirs need to be filled up to a third of its full capacity to have enough space for the extra coolant from your radiator. Check your car's service manual for the specific type of coolant to use and the correct coolant and water mixture.
Test your coolant reservoir cap for the correct pressure.
To avoid coolant overflow, test the efficiency of your coolant reservoir cap using a pressure tester. Check the correct amount of pounds per square inch (psi) that is marked on the reservoir cap and compare it to the reading you got from the pressure tester. If the coolant reservoir cap opens at a significantly lower pressure rating compared to the original specifications, then you have to replace the reservoir cap.
Flush out your coolant mixture from time to time.
Coolant mixture that has been left for several years on the reservoir will probably have accumulated dirt and is not delivering the best cooling performance for your car. Make sure to flush out the old coolant mixture at least once every two years to ensure that your cooling system stays in tiptop shape. Use a good radiator flush to clean out the tank and fill it up afterwards with the specific type of coolant for your vehicle.
Replace damaged seals as soon as possible.
To avoid coolant leaks resulting from worn-out seals, make sure to inspect the seals for signs of damage as part of your regular cooling system maintenance. If the seals have become too weak or too brittle, it's time to replace them.
Visually check your coolant reservoir for damages.
It is always a good idea to do a visual inspection on your coolant reservoir, especially during the really hot or really cold months. Extreme temperatures can weaken this plastic tank, so you should examine it from time to time to see if it has developed some cracks.
