Diagnosing Different Nissan Murano Control Arm Problems
The control arms are a vital parts of the Nissan Murano's steering system. They are what connect the steering system to the wheels, are sort of conduit, and allow you to take control of the vehicle make it go wherever you want it to. Any brake or malfunction that occurs to the control arms will severely affect vehicle control. There are a number of problems that can occur on the control arms, each one giving out different signs or symptoms to alert you. Read on to learn more about Nissan Murano control arm related problems and their causes.
Excess vibrations or shaking on the Nissan Murano's steering wheel
These are usually signs of worn out control arm bushings. With nothing to cushion the controls arms and keep them in place, they will rattle about as the car moves. This becomes more noticeable when driving in the freeway at high speeds, where driving should usually at its smoothest. The control arms aren't the only things at fault when this happens. This problem can also be caused by other parts of the suspension or the wheels.
Squeaking sounds when driving
This problem is usually exacerbated when going through over bumps and rough portions of the road. This squeaking sound is usually caused by two things. The first problem, which is the easier one to fix, is a lack of lubrication. Of course, the only way to fix this problem is to apply the appropriate amount of grease where it is needed. If after a week or so, the sound starts coming back, then you've got another problem, worn bushings.
Excessive steering wheel movement and unresponsive steering
The control arms support the steering system of the Murano. Not surprisingly, any problem with the control arms will translate almost directly into vehicle handling. An unsupported steering wheel will usually move about a lot, steering your vehicle in different directions. The vehicle itself won't be that responsive to the movement of the steering wheel and may wander about. This problem is usually caused by worn out control arm bushings, as usual. At worst, it could also mean that the control arms themselves are worn out. A full replacement of the control arm set is needed in this case.
The controls arms are an integral component of every steering system, including that of the Nissan Murano. A failure from this component could result in a very hard ride. Of course, this will rarely happen if you take good care of them. Here, we show you three simple ways you can properly maintain your Nissan Murano control arms.
- Inspect the control arm regularly.
- A regular visual inspection of the Murano's control arm is the best way to check for any damage or defects. You won't have to do this often; at least every 3,000 to 5,000 miles is good enough. You may have to inspect more often if you frequent pass through very rough roads or other types of terrain that could seriously tax the shocks of any automobile. An inspection should also be done immediately if something seems wrong with the suspension system or if the bottom of the vehicle has been submerged in water. You should check out the structure of the control to determine if there is any damage or warping. Inspect the bushings for wear, and make sure that the joints are still greased.
- Replace the bushing when needed.
- The control arms of the Murano have bushings on their ends where they connect with the other components of the steering and suspension system. They provide a sort of cushion between the connecting parts so they won't damage each other when they move about. Unfortunately, the bushings can take only so much punishment before they wear out. They lose their elasticity and are unable to cushion the movements of the control arm properly. Driving with worn out bushings could quickly wear out the control arms of the Murano along with the other components of the steering system. A visual inspection, as mentioned above will usually reveal the condition of the bushings. When replacing the control arms bushings, it is wise to do it in sets, as opposed to working only on one portion of the vehicle.
- Grease the control arms regularly.
- Grease, like the bushings, help manage the movement of the control arms. Without it, the connecting points of the control arm will wear out quickly and break, a situation you wouldn't want happening if you're barrelling down the freeway. A regular application of grease every time you inspect the control arms is more than enough the keep them well lubricated. If you happen to cross a shallow stream in your Murano or get into similar situations where the bottom of the vehicle is submerged in water, be sure to lubricate the control arms immediately.
