The Jeep Grand Cherokee is American Motors Corporation’s (AMC) entry in the luxury midsize SUV class. Since its introduction in 1992, the Grand Cherokee proved it stature in the segment by bagging the most awards versus its rivals. There are currently four generations of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and over 20 model changes in betweens but it always has been quality for Jeep. Jeep’s strict initiative in achieving top-quality made the Grand Cherokee a recipient of multiple awards left and right.
To know more about the Jeep Grand Cherokee, let’s look closer to one of its suspension system’s significant components—the control arm.
If you are to look at your vehicle’s suspension system right now, you’ll notice a metal arm connecting the steering knuckle to the undercarriage of your car. This metal arm guides the movement of the wheel to keep it in line with the car’s body. The control arm limits the wheel from moving forward or backward whenever the suspension engages on bumps and potholes. A wheel on a Jeep Grand Cherokee has upper and lower control arms.
The control arm is a simple mechanism, typically consisted of three parts. Here’s a closer look at the parts that make up a control arm.
The metal arm is the body of the control arm that spans from the bushing area to the ball joint, or in some designs, from bushing to bushing. Metal arm designs vary depending on which vehicle a control arm fits on. Older and newer models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee have varying control arm designs with different metal arm shapes.
The bushing is found on the inner end of the control arm. However, some designs feature bushings on both ends of the metal arm. What it does is to cushion the connection between the metal arm and the vehicle’s frame. It consists of an outer metal sleeve and a rubber or polyurethane bushing.
Ball joints are commonly found on the outer end of the metal arm. By saying outer end, it’s the end that’s attached to the steering knuckle. It provides the wheel with limited pivoting range, at the same time, allows a synchronized movement of both the wheel and suspension. There are two kinds of ball joints and these are:
Load-carrying ball joints support the weight of the vehicle and provide a pivot point to the steering system.
A type of ball joint that serves as a secondary pivot point for the wheel’s steering knuckle.
There are different control arm designs for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, each one fits a specific model year. To get the perfect fit, use our filter tab and indicate your vehicle’s year, make, and model. You may further customize and narrow the list down by utilizing the “Shop By” menu and selecting from the different categories.
Control arms for the Jeep Grand Cherokee typically cost around $40 to $960. They are sold individually, in kits, or sets. You may find straight OE replacement parts, as well as performance replacements if you wish to upgrade your Jeep’s experience. Be sure to check out the different materials available, design, and color finish.
There are different ways to tell if your car is in need of a control arm replacement. As long as you know what to observe, you probably won’t find it difficult to point out these signs. Accidents, material aging, chemical-related wearing, and improper fitting are just among the many culprits resulting in a failing control arm. A damaged control arm is one of the last things you want to find in your vehicle. You can end up with a damaged control arm if you’re recently involved in an accident so it’s always best to have your car checked after a fender bender.
Since these components have non-metal parts, these are the most susceptible to damage. Cracked bushings or broken ball joints are products of abuse and extensive exposure to stress caused by extreme driving conditions. If you notice something wrong with your wheel movements, be sure to have your car checked by a mechanic as soon as possible.
The metal arm isn’t easily damaged unless there’s a present rusting around its connection points. You may also damage the metal arm after hitting a huge bump at high rates of speed.
Driving with a damaged control arm poses a serious threat to the vehicle’s occupants. With a failing control arm, there’s a possibility for the wheel to behave differently. Changes in the wheel’s behavior can cause difficulties in handling. If you wish to take care of your suspension, wheel, and passengers by not getting in an accident caused by a damaged control arm, get a replacement as soon as you notice evident signs of wearing.
