Color Finish : PolishedCold air intake systems for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 are pretty expensive, so it's only right that you try to keep them running in good condition as long as possible. And right now, nothing is more effective in extending the service life of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 cold air intake system than proper use and regular maintenance.
Maintaining the various cold air intake components for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is relatively simple, although it will require some special tools and peripherals. In this guide, we will share some basic yet highly effective tips on how to maintain the individual parts of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 cold air intake system.
Because it absorbs almost all of the contaminants that pass through the air intake, a large portion of the maintenance checklist for cold air intakes is relegated to the filter. Ideally, cold air intake filters should be cleaned every 5,000 miles or whenever the oil is changed. Most aftermarket filters also feature indicators that make it easy for truck owners to determine whether the filter needs cleaning or not.
Different manufacturers have their own recommendations on how to clean their filters of dust and grime, but in most instances, it revolves around using air filter cleaners. These specially-formulated cleaners are designed to break down dirt for easy rinsing without damaging the sensitive filter media.
Aside from washing them, we also recommend lubricating the filters with filter oil afterwards. This lubricant keeps the filter media from drying out, prolonging its service life. Most filter oil sold in the market today is also spray-based, making it easy to apply.
Over time, fuel and dirt will start to accumulate at the intake valves, turning into a sticky substance that will, in turn, harden into carbon deposits. These deposits can block the valves if left unchecked, resulting in rough running, idling, and other problems. So if you experience any of these symptoms or you have just had the air filters replaced, check the valve for any carbon deposits.
A cold air intake will give your Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a significant boost in horsepower without needing to overhaul the engine—provided that it is installed correctly of course. Like most aftermarket engine parts, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 cold air intake is a set of precision components, and even a minor miscalculation may cause loss of power from the engine or even damage its components.
If you have decided to install a cold air intake in your Chevrolet Silverado 1500, be sure to follow the instructions carefully. In this guide, we’ll share additional tips on how to make installing these cold air intakes on your truck a bit easier.
Tip #1: Make sure the engine has cooled completely before installing.
Keep in mind that you will be in close contact with the engine when installing the intake components, so starting while the engine is still hot is definitely a no-no. In addition, we also recommend disconnecting the car battery terminals first to avoid electric shock.
Tip #2: Don’t throw away the stock intake if it’s still in good condition.
Even if you have no plans of having the stock intake anywhere near your truck again, it would be advisable to keep it as a backup. It’s not rare to encounter problems while installing an aftermarket cold air intake, so having your old intake around should get you and your truck to the nearest auto repair shop in case a problem arises.
Tip #3: Be careful when handling the sensors.
The sensors are quite fragile, so be very careful when handling them while removing the old intake or installing the new one.
Tip #4: Consider getting a bypass valve.
If your cold air intake kit doesn’t come with a bypass valve, we recommend that you also install one along with your kit. Mounted inline on the air intake system, the bypass valve is basically a secondary air filter that serves as a backup in case the main air filter gets clogged or malfunctions.
Tip #5: Check the intake for play.
Once it is mounted in place, try and move the intake around. If any of the intake parts strikes any objects in the engine bay, tighten the screws and try and move the parts again until the play is reduced.
Actual improvements to the performance of the vehicle may vary wildly. They may range from significant to barely noticeable. If there is little difference to engine performance after installing the intake, the car may have other problems. Fixing or improving the other parts of the Silverado like the exhaust system or the fuel system may do the trick.
One major issue with the cold air intake is the position of intake's air scoop. If the air scoops are installed too low in the vehicle or if they are too exposed, there is a possibility that water could enter them. Obviously, water is very bad and too much of it could flood the engine.
Laws regarding such modifications may vary from place to place but one state every driver should really look out for is California. California has the toughest emission laws in the country and forbids a number of modifications that could affect the emission of a vehicle. As long as the car part is legal in California, it's good for every other state. Just to be safe, car owners should call the auto part manufacturer or their DMV for details.
There are basically two main type of cold air intakes available, the standard intake and the Ram intake. The standard intake is composed of a long pipe with the air scoop positioned a good distance from the engine to minimize the entry of hot air. The Ram filter, on the other hand, is a relatively short pipe with a shielded, forward facing air scoop positioned at the front of the vehicle. This forces a blast of air into the engine.
