Three Symptoms of a Faulty Jeep Cj7 Clutch Kit
While the engine spins all the time, the car's wheels do not. In order for your vehicle to stop without killing the engine, the wheels need to be disconnected from the engine temporarily. This is what the Jeep Cj7 clutch kit is for. It smoothly engages a spinning engine to a non-spinning transmission, so that the engine stays on even while car's on idle. However, there are times when the clutch assembly fails. Catch it early before you get into a serious accident by knowing these common faulty clutch symptoms.
Clutch drag
If you feel the clutch not releasing completely and the transmission grinding whenever you shift, this indicates that the clutch is already dragging. If you're experiencing this, consider these possible causes:
- The linkage might be out of adjustment or might be binding. Simply adjust or repair the component.
- The master cylinder might be leaking internally. If it is, measure the master cylinder's linear travel against that of the slave cylinder. If there's too much discrepancy, replace the master cylinder.
- The release arm might be too long for the linkage system. Determine the correct ratio, To do this, get the difference in length between the pivot point and the release bearing centerline. Then, divide this by the distance from the pivot point to where the linkage attaches.
Clutch slippage
Clutch slippage is when the clutch temporarily disengages because it has reached a higher level of torque than it is designed to handle. To find the cause of this problem, check the following components:
- The release bearing, which might be too long and might be holding the clutch in a slightly disengaged position. Replace it with a shorter release bearing.
- The flywheel, pressure plate, and disk, which have friction surfaces that might be glazed from the heat. Either resurface the components or replace the whole assembly with a new clutch kit.
- The clutch disc and the spring load, which might be too small or too light. Replace either or both components with a larger disc or a heavier spring.
Clutch chatter
When you engage the clutch and you hear a vibration, the vibration you hear is called a "clutch chatter." There are several possible causes of this symptom:
- The damper springs in the clutch disc hub or the marcel spring between the facings might be fatigued. Replace the old disc with a new component.
- The friction surface on the flywheel or pressure plate might be glazed from the heat, or it might be running out. You will have to resurface, or even replace, the damaged component.
- If you see oil on the friction surfaces, repair the oil leak. It's usually in the engine rear main or oil pan. Then, replace the disc. When removing the affected component, avoid getting the oil on the other parts.
Your Jeep Cj7 clutch kit is prone to routine beatings because it uses friction to engage the spinning engine, which can wear out the surfaces of the clutch. Instead of just waiting for this to happen, you need to check and service it regularly, especially since each component in the assembly wear out at different rates. Doing so would most likely increase their lifespan and reduce the need for transmission maintenance.
How to maximize the life of your clutch and optimize the transmission
- After each shift, fully remove your foot from the clutch pedal. Not doing so will keep the clutch from releasing fully, which will potentially result in slippage and quickly destroy the clutch facing and other parts.
- Make sure that the clutch assembly has some "free play." This means that the clutch pedal should always move a little with very light pressure. A space of one-half to one inch would do. It's important for the assembly to have this much space so the clutch can properly transmit all engine power to the wheels.
- Never shift gears without using the clutch or without fully releasing the clutch pedal.
- If you detect any changes in how your transmission works or if you hear any grinding noises as you change gears, immediately do a basic troubleshooting.
Other maintenance tips
- When inspecting the clutch assembly, don't just check for worn components. Look out for oil leakage, damaged pressure plate release levers, and a sprung clutch disc hub.
- Refer to your owner's manual to see if your Jeep requires a periodic clutch adjustment and when it should be done. Many newer models have self-adjusting clutches that automatically compensate for excessive play in the linkage.
- Be familiar with each component of your vehicle's clutch assembly, as some models have extra parts. For example, some Jeep models might have a clutch safety switch, while some might not have one. You can check your owner's manual to see the parts comprising the assembly.
- If your Jeep Cj7 has continuously variable transmission (CVT), be reminded that it requires a different maintenance regimen from the manual or automatic transmissions. This also means that not all of these tips on clutch maintenance may apply to your vehicle.
