A platinum catalyst is expensive, are there any other alternatives for the Subaru Impreza?

At present, there are three types of catalytic converters that aftermarket retailers sell. The most basic type is the oxidation converter. It manages hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide. The elements on an oxidation converter are usually covered in platinum to handle the harsh hydrocarbon substance. Currently, an oxidation converter is losing its popularity since platinum is continuously becoming a scarce element to come by; also, emission laws already require vehicles to considerably lessen nitrogen oxide exhaust in cars; this is where a reduction converter comes to play. A reduction converter eliminates hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and NOx. Lastly--and arguably the most efficient type--is the dual bed converter. It uses a combination of two- and three-way cat-cons housed in a single unit. The dual bed converter is the frequent choice for speed drivers and off-roaders. For the Subaru Impreza however, a reduction converter is more than enough to support the needs of the sedan.
What is the government policy on catalytic converter replacement?
Federal law stipulates all aftermarket catalytic converters should have a durability of at least five years or 50,000 miles. Every purchase should also have a minimum warranty covering that period of time. Hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide emissions should also be lessened by at least 90 percent.
