P0430 came up during the recent diagnostics of the Lexus L2400. Does this mean that the catalytic converter already needs to be replaced?
P0430 means catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 2); though it may indicate the need for a catcon replacement, it may also indicate other problems such as a malfunctioning bank 2 oxygen sensor or leaking exhaust system. P0420 is usually the code that requires immediate catcon replacement. Unless this code pops up during the diagnostics, don't assume that the problematic part is the catalytic converter; check its nearby components first.
What is the difference between a Lexus LS400 catalytic converter made of aluminized steel and one that is made of stainless steel?
Stainless steel catalytic converters usually have a lower price, high level of resistance to corrosion, and polished appearance. These are perfect for vehicles used in cold areas with frequent snowfall. Aluminized steel catcons, on the other hand, may cost more but these fare better in high temperatures and dry climates.
