The carpet of the Toyota Pickup may have looked clean and bright when you first bought it from the dealership, but after a year that same carpet will have been reduced into a mess of dirt and stains. If you have kids and pets, that carpet's pristine condition may last even less than that. But with regular maintenance you can keep the Toyota Pickup carpet kit in good condition - even when under frequent use — for several years before needing to be replaced.
When cleaning and maintaining the carpets of your pickup, here are some tips to follow:
A portable vacuum cleaner is still the best way to get rid of dirt, crumbs, and dry particles from your truck's carpet. We recommend using a brush — or a brush attachment if you have one — alongside the vacuum in order to lift up dirt that's settled at the bottom of the carpet. Pay extra attention on the corners and crevices, as these are often the areas where dirt and gunk accumulate.
Stains such as those from food and beverages can usually be removed with cold water and glass cleaner. Glass cleaner works nearly as well as a standard carpet cleaner in lifting out stains from carpets without leaving the soapy residue found in the latter. Blot the stains with water and, once it dries, spray on glass cleaner and let it sit for five minutes before scrubbing.
Grease and oil-based stains are notoriously hard to remove from carpets, but it is possible with the help of paint thinner and salt. Rub the thinner into the stain with a clean cloth, pour salt or cornmeal over it, and let it sit for an hour or two before vacuuming it up. The thinner should break down the grease, which in turn would be absorbed by the salt or cornmeal.
We recommend applying a layer of carpet protectant on the carpet after every cleaning session. Aside from helping repel dirt and stains, protectant also rejuvenates the fibers and helps restore the carpet's vibrant appearance. There are protectants available that are specially designed for automobile carpets, but sprays for household carpets works just as well.
Installing a carpet kit on your Toyota Pickup is best done by a professional, but if you are confident of your skills and have the tools on hand you can install the carpet on your own. In this guide, we'll share some key tips for you to follow when using a Toyota Pickup carpet kit.
Tip #1: Let the new carpet sit for two hours.
Chances are that your brand new carpet arrived rolled up like a tube. The carpet in this curled-up state is not suitable for installation, so you need to unroll it first and let it sit on a flat surface for at least two hours in order for the material to relax and lose its "curl".
Tip #2: Use the old carpet as template.
Your new carpet will likely have a larger size than normal, so you will need your old carpet as a template to help trim it down to size. Simply lay down the old carpet on top of the new one and start cutting.
Tip #3: Remove all of the components that are in the way.
Getting that ratty old carpet out from your pickup will also entail removing the driver and passenger seats, the seatbelts, the center console, trim pieces, and other parts that are on top of the carpet. The seats are typically secured with fairly large bolts and straps, while the seat belts are often secured with Torx anchor bolts. In addition, you should also disconnect any electrical connectors under each seat, as well as unscrew the shift knob from the console.
Tip #4: Clean up dirt and residue.
Once the old carpet is out of the way, get a portable vacuum and clean out any dirt and residue off the floor pan. You should also take this moment to look for rust on the floor. Minor rust spots can usually be treated by spraying the affected areas with rust converter, but more severe cases to the point that the corrosion has left holes in the floor may require a patch job first before fitting the carpet in place. Once the floor pan is clean, apply a coat of rust-inhibiting paint to further protect the floor against rust.
