The carpet in your Pontiac Firebird can last as long as your vehicle, but it won't last a year if you don't care for it properly. Foot traffic, pets, kids, spills, and frequent off-road use can quickly turn the carpet into a ratty mess. You can also add to that the hassles and high cost of getting a replacement Pontiac Firebird carpet kit. So if you want to keep the carpet in your Firebird in good condition—and save money in replacement costs—make sure to clean and maintain it on a regular basis. With that said, here are some tips you might find handy in maintaining the carpet in your vehicle:
A portable vacuum cleaner is the best solution for loose dirt, dust, and other dry particles littering on the carpet, but it may not be enough to remove debris deeply embedded onto the carpet fibers. Instead, brush the carpet first with a carpet brush or a vacuum brush attachment. The brush should be able to dislodge any embedded dirt for the vacuum to pick up.
Dropped your cup of morning coffee by accident? Blot it out with water and paper towels while it is still moist. Letting spills dry will allow the stains to stick onto the fibers, making them harder to clean up.
Grease, engine oil, and petroleum-based spills can be harder to clean up compared to regular stains, but a bit of paint thinner should be able to clear it up. Rub a small amount of thinner on the stained area using cotton cloth and cover it with salt overnight. The thinner should blot out the oil enough for the salt to absorb. For colorfast carpets, replace the paint and salt with cornmeal instead.
Is the carpet starting to smell like your socks? Deodorize it by sprinkling a generous amount of borax onto its surface and letting it sit for an hour before vacuuming. The borax can also help kill fleas, bedbugs, and other insects that reside on the carpet fibers.
Is the carpet in your Pontiac Firebird going through its final, grime-encrusted pace? Then a new replacement carpet may be in order. And while installing a new carpet in the vehicle's interior may seem overwhelming for newbies, it is actually not that difficult. Many Pontiac Firebird carpet kits come with installation instructions, so the process can be as simple as following the steps. If you are thinking of getting a Pontiac Firebird carpet kit, here are some tips that can help you out during the replacement process:
Tip #1: Let the new carpet flatten for several hours.
Carpet kits usually arrive curled up and out of shape from shipping, so you have to unroll it in a warm area and let it settle to its original shape for one or two hours. Use your hands to push back molded areas that have popped out of place, and place heavy objects such as books on flat areas that are significantly bent. Take note that the carpet may also appear wrinkled; this is completely normal and the carpet will revert to its original form once it is installed properly.
Tip #2: Clean the floor panel before installation.
The floor pan underneath the carpet is also likely to have accumulated dust, dirt, and, if you're lucky, some coins after several years ago. Get a vacuum cleaner and vacuum up any loose dirt and other particles on the surface. You should take note for any signs of corrosion as well. Small rust spots are normal especially for older cars, but corrosion of significant size will need to be treated first before you install your new carpet to prevent it from eating up the floor pan.
Tip #3: Remove excess carpet material in small amounts.
While cutting out excess material from the carpet in large pieces may speed up the process, it also makes more likely for you to cut too much of the material. Using the old carpet as reference, slowly trim the new carpet using a sharp box cutter or a pair of scissors. Do not use a drill to cut holes in the carpet; the fibers may get caught in the drill bit, causing the carpet to unravel or for the bit to grab and wrap the carpet and your arm around the drill.
