Ready-fit car covers, or universal-fit covers as they are also called, are designed to accommodate a wide variety of vehicles under a specific size group, while custom-fit car covers are specially tailored to the dimensions of a specific make and model.
The general rule when installing a car cover is to start in the middle and end with the front and rear bumpers. If the car cover is custom-fit and has pockets for the side mirrors and antenna, start with these first and work your way from the middle. This way, the cover will fit snugly on your Mazda without tearing the material.
Car covers are made up of numerous materials, but they can be grouped into three basic types: plastic, cotton, and breathable fabric blend.
Composed of either plastic film or plastic-coated fabric, plastic car covers are completely waterproof. But they also keep moisture inside the car, trapping condensation that may lead to rust or damage to the car’s paint. This is why it is recommended to use a flannel cover underneath the plastic one so the flannel wicks the moisture while the plastic serves as a shield against the elements.

Breathable fabric covers are a blend of synthetic fabrics and materials, offering decent water-resistant properties while at the same time allowing air to circulate like that of cotton covers. High-end versions of breathable covers are also UV and tear-resistant.
Believe it or not, but color should be a major factor to consider when shopping for a car cover. This is because the car cover’s color may affect paint surface of your Mazda. Vehicles stored under hot climates, for example, need lighter colored fabrics as they absorb less heat from the sun than covers with darker hues. Cars with a white or a similarly-hued paint job may also benefit from lightly colored car covers as they are less likely to bleed when wet.
Different car covers have specific cleaning instructions stated on their manual, but in general they need to be washed using a commercial washer with all-purpose cleaner. Put the cover in the washer filled with warm water, pour the cleaner, begin the wash cycle, rinse twice, and hang the cover to dry. Make sure not to use a washer with a central agitator or fabric softener as this can destroy the cover material.
If the car cover is breathable, then it is perfectly safe to place a wet car cover on your Mazda vehicle. In fact, car cover manufacturers say it is the best way to dry out breathable car covers. However, this is not advisable during the winter season, as the cover may freeze in place and may be difficult to remove afterwards without tearing the material.
Ideally, you should wash a car cover as often as you use it. Dirt and debris on the cover material can scratch against your car’s surface as well as hinder the water-resistant properties of plastic and breathable car covers.
A car cover cannot protect your Mazda vehicle from being stolen, but it can make it less likely to be a target of theft. Car thieves need to break into the cabin, start the engine, and drive off as quickly as possible to reduce their chances of being caught. But with a car cover, thieves are deterred from breaking in as removing the car cover takes time and makes their actions more noticeable to passersby. There are also car covers designed to accommodate cables and locks for further theft deterrence. Also, because they cover the entire vehicle, car covers hide valuable items inside your car from would-be thieves.
