There’s nothing wrong with washing the car cover frequently. As long as you follow the washing instructions that come with the cover, you won’t do your cover any harm. Also, be familiar with your car cover’s fabric as there are some that necessitates commercial dry cleaning. Washing or drying them at home may damage the fabric.
If the tree sap remained in the cover even after you’ve washed it, you can rub the affected spot with either denatured alcohol or mineral spirits. Depending on how stubborn the sap is, you can dub it with paper towel to get it off the fabric or scrape it with a spoon or knife.
It’s important that you understand the care instructions that come along with your car cover. Do not wash it on a washing machine and don’t dry it on a dryer unless the instructions say that it is machine washable and dryable. Even if the cover is machine washable, it is still advised that you avoid using washing machines with center agitators. Much as you want the cover to smell good, you must stay away from fabric softener as it can compromise the cover’s water resistance capabilities. Also make sure that the detergent you will be using has no bleach.
If the sun’s still up, you’d better park your ride in the shade before putting on the cover. Don’t worry much about the tree sap and bird droppings as most outdoor car covers are made to protect your ride from such. You can also choose a car cover that offers better heat insulation. Such car covers are usually multi-layered to prevent heat from getting into your ride’s surface.
If your ride has sharp ornaments and add-ons, you can reinforce the cover right on the spots that will come in direct contact with these sharp objects. You can use a duct tape for such purpose. It’s also advised that you allow your ride to cool down first before putting the cover on. Hot exhaust pipes will surely burn or, at least, weaken the part of the cover that’s regularly exposed to them. When not in use, make it a point to fold and store the cover properly. Do not store it away if it has bird droppings, tree sap, mud, and other filth. Get rid of the dirt first before storing the cover.
Provided that your vehicle is clean, yes you can put it on and allow it to dry in there. This is actually one of the best ways to dry a breathable cover because as the temperature rises, water and moisture will simply evaporate, leaving the cover dry even on the underside.
If your ride has an antenna and you ordered a custom car cover, it will usually come with an antenna patch, which usually has an adhesive backing. Attach the antenna patch to the spot in the cover that’s directly hit by the antenna if it is properly installed and aligned. Right at the center of the patch, punch a custom-fit hole for the antenna. There are also covers that come with a grommet that you can put on the hole you made for the antenna.
