Shopping for Mazda Bumper Cover
1. I am spraying silver base coat on my Mazda bumper cover. I read somewhere that it is wise to throw in some vertical strokes. Is that true?
Yes, it is a good idea to apply some vertical strokes of base coat for you to avoid "tiger striping". If you are doing the painting job in a garage, make it a point to open your garage door and put in a dust mask. You can even consider using a respirator, if available. In case you are spraying in an area with a temperature lower than 55 degrees, it is advisable to use a heat gun and apply from a distance of about 12 inches. This can trim down the time it takes for your base coat to dry.
2. My ride is fitted with a bumper absorber as well as bumper trims. Won’t these add-ons affect the bumper cover installation?
Yes, they might get in the way during installation. As for the trims, you simply need to remove them from your old bumper and transfer them to the new one. The foam absorber inside the bumper structure may impede your installation as they are sometimes difficult to hold in place while you’re doing the process. If you are facing such issue, try to temporarily tape down the absorbers until you’ve securely installed the bumper cover.
3. My Mazda bumper cover has paint chip. Can you give me some tips on how I can clean the affected area to prepare it for the touch up job or DIY fix?
The first thing you need to do is to isolate the affected spot by masking off the area around it using a masking tape. With lacquer thinner or alcohol, wipe off dirt, road grime, wax, and grease from the area inside the chip and around it. Use only clean, lint-free cloth when cleaning the chip. In case the chip exposes the metal component of the cover, scratch up the metal with 40-grit emery cloth. By doing so, the primer and paint have something to stick on or grab on to. Don’t forget to clean out any rust formation.
4. Someone told me that I should apply e-coat into my Mazda bumper cover. When is it applicable?
If you want to paint your new bumper cover before installing it, and it isn’t primed yet, then you can opt to apply an e-coat. Before doing so, make sure the cover is free of dirt and any grease. If there are any surface imperfections, you can wet-sand them to achieve a smooth surface. To keep your sandpaper wet, spray slightly soapy water on the area you are sanding.
5. I noticed that my Mazda bumper cover is held in place by rivets and bolts. How can I properly unhook and unbolt them so I can take off the old bumper cover without damaging something in front of my ride?
You will need to use a screwdriver to unhook the rivets that secure the wheel well in place. Once the rivets have been unhooked, remove the wheel covers and set them aside. The bolts that attach the bumper to the wheel well can be unbolted using a wrench. However, you may need to get under your Mazda to access the bolts. After loosening and removing the bolts, that’s the time to unhook the plastic locks and have the bumper cover removed.
6. My Mazda bumper cover has a scratch, which I suspect is deep. How can I determine how deep it is?
The best way to examine the scratch and determine how serious or deep it is is to run the tip of your fingernail across the scratch. If your fingernail catches in the groove as you run it across, then the scratch is deep. If it doesn’t catch, then that’s just superficial or surface scratch.
7. What if the scratch is just superficial? Any tips on fixing it?
You can fix a superficial scratch by simply buffing it out using, of course, a buffing compound. To do this, attach the buffer pad at the tip of your drill. Put in the buffing compound to the buffer pad and with the help of the drill, buff out the scratch evenly. If you notice a white line after buffing, apply some clear coat. Wait for the clear coat to dry, then buff and wax your vehicle as usual.
- How do I get rid of scratches on fiber glass or plastic bumper cover?
One common way is by liberally applying wax on the affected area. If the scratch marks are not really obvious, wax would be enough to make them even less noticeable. This process simply hides the unsightly scratches, though. If you need to deal with too visible scratches, sanding is the most effective way. Wet the sandpaper and make circular motions with mild pressure against the bumper cover. You may need to soak the sandpaper in water from time to time in order to ensure of a smooth result. Work your way until the surface is smoothened out. Take note that the sandpaper with the finest grit is the best to use on this.
- How can I easily remove bug remnants on my Mazda bumper cover?
Wash with soap and water. If the dead bugs have hardened already, soak the bumper cover in water first so as to soften the remnants. Because if you already try to rub off the bugs while they are still hard, you will just be frustrated at how stubborn they are. Hosing for several minutes will help soften them. In the actual cleaning, you can use a soft cloth to wipe the bugs off, but bug sponge would do the job more efficiently. The solution to this is drying the bumper cover with dry clean cloth.
- What is the best way to pull a dent so as bring back my Mazda bumper cover's original shape?
You can try pulling the dent with the aid of suction. In this process, you need not take the bumper cover off the attachment. But if this fails, you need to uninstall it so that you could work on the part's back portion. Hammering it from behind will push the dent back in place.
