Maintenance Tips for Ford F150 Bug Shield
Bug shields are often the last entry in the maintenance to-do list for the Ford F150, but these aftermarket accessories do require a bit of care every now and then. Ford F150 bug shields are susceptible to wear just like any part of your truck, and without proper care, they will eventually break.
Thankfully, maintaining the Ford F150 bug shield is relatively easy and requires only the basic tools you can find in most households. In this guide, we'll share some simple tips on how you can maintain the bug shields and deflectors in your Ford F150.
- Steer clear of drive-in car washes.
While it is a given that cleaning the bug shields once they get dirty is essential in keeping these accessories in good condition, it is advised to wash these deflectors by hand. This is because automatic car washes are not designed to clean car accessories like the bug shield, and thus will not be able to wash them properly. In addition, many automatic car washes use stiff brushes that may scratch the plastic.
- Don't use strong chemicals or solvents when cleaning your car.
Chemicals such as ammonia or alcohol can strip off the protective coating of the bug shield, making it more exposed to the elements. Stick with mild soap or car shampoo mixed with water and wipe dry with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Wax and polish chrome shields.
If your truck is fitted with chromed bug shields, we recommend applying wax or polish on the surface after every wash. The polish will give an almost mirror-like finish to the chrome and add a layer of protection against UV rays and moisture.
- Remove stubborn bug stains with WD-40.
Is the bug residue not coming off even after a good washing? Try WD-40. Spray a liberal amount on the stained areas and allow it to soak for several minutes before wiping it off with a microfiber cloth. Most bug stains can be removed with one wipe, although especially stubborn ones may need one or two applications before they are completely cleared. In addition, WD-40 can be used to get rid of pesky stains such as sap and tar as well.
Bug deflectors are a great way to keep those hard-to-remove bug stains off the hood, windshield, and windows of your Ford F150, but they can be a bit tricky to install especially if you have no prior experience. But with the right tools and a lot of patience, it is possible to install the Ford F150 bug shield on the first try.
In this guide, we’ll share some tips on how you can make installing a Ford F150 bug shield or bug deflector a problem-free process.
Tip #1: Make sure that the area where shield or deflector will be mounted is clean and dry.
This is especially important for bug shields that are mounted via industrial-strength adhesive tape as the tape will not stick properly on a dirty or wet surface. Wash the hood with soapy water and rinse well, and follow it up with an alcohol swab to remove any grease or other chemicals left on the hoods surface. Most bug shield kits come with a pair of alcohol swabs just for this purpose. Once the hood is clean, wipe it dry with a soft, clean cloth.
Tip #2: Install at room temperature.
Bug shield manufacturers typically recommend installing the bug shield at temperatures between 65°F-110°F (18°C-43°C) as the plastic used in the shield is very sensitive to temperature changes. Cold weather, for instance, may cause the shield to shrink or become brittle.
Tip #3: Pre-fit first before mounting.
Pre-fitting ensures that the bug shield is aligned perfectly with the hood and helps you anticipate any potential problems that may arise during the actual installation. Measure the width of the shield against the hood to determine the center, and set out the tape or other mounting hardware on its specified locations to see if there are any obstructions.
Tip #4: Make sure that the rear of the bug shield does not touch the hood.
The rear end of the shield tends to rub against the edge of the hood, which over time may scrape off the paint surface. Most kits usually come with rubber bumpers that can be fitted in between the hood and the shield to prevent this, although you can also purchase a pack of these bumpers from any auto parts store.
