One of the things you rely on heavily during your weekend or everyday drive is your brakes. Brakes are an important part of a car simply because of their purpose: to help a stop a car during crucial moments. Failing or missing brakes can help cause a lot of problems for a car owner. That's why, during the first sign of problems, such as the ones that are discussed below, you should bring your car in for a check-up or for maintenance.
Noisy brakes
It happens to most owners. They try out a new brake pad set, and after some miles, the brake pad starts making noises that doesn't really sound well. Brake pads tend to produce these noises when the shim comes loose. A good shim will not produce noise because they effectively separate the pads and rotors from each other. In case you have a faulty shim, you can remedy it by applying anti-squeal sauce on it. If this doesn't work, you can go for a replacement or bring in the faulty brake pads for repair.
Vibrating brakes
Vibration is not a good sign of a brake. This is most commonly met in cars which are bought second-hand. The reason for this is that rust and scale might've developed on the rotor where you install your new brakes. In order for you to avoid experiencing this, make sure that the rotors of your car are clean before you install them. Also, you can replace the rotors again with brand new parts. This is to avoid experiencing black spotting of the rotor.

Brake fluid check-ups
The brake fluid is an important part of the brake pad set that helps it to do its job. Brake fluids have to be checked weekly or when you reach 250 miles. To do this, simply check the indicator marks. If it falls below the normal level, add fluid as is required. This fluid also needs to be changed every 2 years or 30, 000 miles, whichever comes first. Be sure to check your local ordinance for proper ways of doing away with your spoiled brake fluid and other such fluids.
Check your rear drum brakes
You can also check for the thickness and the degree of wear on the rear brakes. Do it by simply removing the rubber plug from the backing plate and use a flashlight to see the drum brake for yourself. It should be a warning for you to change them if your shoes are worn down to 1/16 of an inch.
Other things to spot
There are many other things you need to look for if you want to preserve your brake pad sets. Check your drum for signs of cracks, scratches, or hard spots. Also, check your brake lines for cracks, leaks, bends, corrosion, and any other damage it might have received.
