The brake pads of the Dodge Ram 1500 may be disposable components, but this doesn’t mean that you should no longer care for them. A bit of proper use and maintenance can extend the operational life of the Dodge Ram 1500 brake pads significantly and help prevent common problems such as squealing and scoring of the brake disc.
Here are some simple yet highly effective tips on how to maintain the brake pads on your Dodge Ram 1500:
How long the brake pads will last depends on a lot of variables, but a significant part of that is influenced by how you brake. Sudden braking after driving at high speeds, for instance, will quickly overheat the friction material of the brake pad, reducing its effectiveness.
The brake pads have a variety of ways of telling that something is wrong, including loud squealing noises, a pulsating brake pedal, or the car pulling over to one side when braking. Be aware of the symptoms of brake pad failure in your truck and address them as soon as possible.
Even a small amount of these chemicals can cause a vast reduction in braking performance and will require replacement of the brake pads on that side of the vehicle.
Most brake pads sold nowadays have an indicator that generates a high-pitched noise whenever the pad needs replacing. It’s not recommended to use the pads beyond this point as there may not be enough friction material on the pad to sustain an optimum braking performance. In addition, severely abraded or worn out brake pads will also score or scrape against the surface of the brake disc, damaging it in the process.
When the inevitable happens and the brake pad needs replacing, we recommend switching to high-quality brake pads. Although OEM brake pads provide adequate braking performance, high-grade brake pads such as ceramic and organic brake pads offer additional benefits such as less brake dust, reduced noise, and are gentler on the brake disc surface. So while such brake pads may be expensive upfront, switching to these will be a better investment in the long run.
Brake pads are constantly exposed to friction and high temperatures, so it’s really not that surprising that they are among the most parts to cause problems in the Dodge Ram 1500. And troubleshooting various brake pad problems is essential in determining the source of the malfunction – whether it is the brake pads or other part of your truck’s brakes – and making the appropriate repairs.
The following are some common issues with the Dodge Ram 1500 brake pad set and how you can troubleshoot them:
If you hear a squealing, grinding, or scraping noise whenever you step on the brake pedal, it means the brake disc is having problems engaging the brake pad. In most cases, the brake pad’s friction material may have completely rubbed off, although it can also mean the brake disc’s surface needs cleaning or damaged.
A brake pad that’s unevenly worn will show deep grooves on the surface. This indicates that the brake pad is not rubbing against the brake disc correctly and may require the replacement of the disc and pad.
In this case, the wear of the pads is also uneven but with one end showing a different thickness than the other. This is often caused by a distorted caliper or excessive caliper clearance. Adjust the clearance or replace the caliper if necessary.
Brake pad residue or brake dust on the wheels is a normal occurrence, but too much of it could indicate worn springs on the brake caliper. The calipers rely on a set of springs to push and pull the pads off the disc’s surface, but once they wear out, the caliper will not be able to completely remove the pads from the surface. This extra wear from the pads will, in turn, increase the amount of dust because the brakes have to work harder to slow down the car.
Fractures on the pad is often caused by excessive heat, either caused by an improperly balanced braking system or a faulty caliper, resulting in the friction material becoming brittle and breaking apart. Cracked brake pads, no matter the degree of damage, will no longer be able to perform properly and must be replaced immediately.
