This is a brilliant conversion of a utilitarian vehicle to a more fun-filled ride. And one of the features that make it one sweet ride is the use of the Toyota 4Runner brake disc. This allows you to be able control and stop your vehicle more precisely whenever it is needed. As contrast to having drum brakes at the front, you have more confidence using discs when you are out for a long drive or even a quick errand. It has been the standard equipment for most modern vehicles today, at least on the front. They provide a more predictable braking response as opposed to the reaction you get with the old drum brakes. But nevertheless, you should still maintain a constant lookout for signs that tell you something is wrong with that component. Here are some tips on how to diagnose your brake disc.
Tip #1: Notice if your 4Runner steers away from the current direction when you use your brakes.
One of the main purposes of equipping vehicles with disc brake systems is to provide you confidence in using the brakes. This eliminates the possibility of your ride from steering to any other direction as you come to a full stop. This occurrence used to be a frequent scenario with vehicles fitted with front drum brakes. But yours is equipped with discs. When this kind of issue manifests, it is possible that your caliper is stuck with your brake disc. Carefully examine and remedy the problem.
Tip #2: Drive your SUV in a straight smooth road. Try to feel any weird vibrations.

Is it okay to machine a customized brake disc for the Toyota 4Runner?

It must have a high friction coefficient that can absorb and disperse large amounts of heat without adversely affecting the braking performance--gray cast iron plates are a very good choice. Ceramics and Al-MMC are of the highest quality, but they can also get very expensive.
What is the best type of brake disc for the Toyota 4Runner?
There are four types of brake discs available in the market. The standard stock for all cars is the flat-faced disc; it has a large surface area that gives decent braking power. However, as the part ages, it has a tendency to overheat, and may cause the disc to warp. A drilled disc is also available; heat is distributed to all the holes that are scattered throughout its face. The downside is that a drilled disc is prone to cracking. A dimpled disc on the other hand, scatters the pad debris produced when braking. These are also lightweight compared to its counterparts. Lastly--and probably the best choice for the Toyota 4Runner--is the grooved disc. The face of the disc has diagonal lines cut into them to allow heat to dissipate when driving fast. It also expels brake dust to prevent pad glazing. But installing a grooved disc is a bit tricky; it has to be fixed in such a way that the groove spins outwards, opposite the usual rotation of the disc.
When should the Toyota 4Runner brake disc be replaced?
That depends on the driving demands sustained by the vehicle. If the car is used mostly for city driving at the usual cruise speeds, then the disc can last for five years at the most. However, if the vehicle is mostly driven for performance, the brake disc might need to be replaced at least every two months.
