Tips to Keep Your Subaru Impreza Brake Disc in Top Condition

It is your Subaru Impreza brake disc that presses against the brake pads to slow down your ride safely. Because it produces heat and friction along with the pads, it wears out over time. Thus, you must know how to maintain it to maximize its service life and prevent it from wearing out and getting damaged prematurely. Here are tips to keep your brake disc functioning efficiently:

  • Surface rust can be removed easily but consult a professional for heavy rust accumulation.

If you notice that rust is accumulating on the surface of your brake disc, there is no need to worry because the contact of the brake pads against your disc can remove the rust. But you can also take away the rust by using a sandpaper to buff the surface of your brake disc. You can do this while the caliper is removed, which serves as the housing of the brake pads. However, if you notice that the rust on your brake disc has already accumulated in huge amounts, you must consult a professional if your brake disc needs to be repaired or replaced.

  • Drive moderately to give your brakes enough time to cool down.

Is it possible to extend the life span of a Subaru Impreza brake disc?

Yes, it possible to extend the mileage of a brake disc. Brake discs are constantly subject to frictional heat, which is why they are made from heat-resistant materials. Eventually, the disc becomes unevenly thin, and this will require turning or skimming of the disc. This procedure requires the disc to be reinstalled in the opposite manner so that the other part of the disc will be the one subjected to friction. What is the best possible material for a brake disc?

There are two performance brake disc materials: carbon-carbon (CC) and carbon-ceramic matrix (CCM). The main difference is that CCM brake discs allow wearing of the pads and not the disc, while CC brake discs wear both the pads and the disc. Aside from being less brittle than ceramic, CC brake discs can withstand high temperatures of up to 2000 degrees Celsius, which can even be exceeded with the application of coatings against oxidation. CCM brake discs are temperature-resistant and hard, but once the temperature reaches above 750 degrees Celsius, the carbon molecules will disintegrate into carbon dioxide, making the disc weaker and wear fast.
