Tips on How to Care and Maintain the Nissan Maxima Brake Disc
The brake discs of your Nissan Maxima can last anywhere from a year to a five years, and the difference depends on how well it is maintained. While it is built to be tough, a Nissan Maxima brake disc is constantly exposed to heat and friction that can shorten its lifespan significantly. If you want your Nissan Maxima brake disc to last longer, take note of the following maintenance tips.
- Replace and refill the brake fluid regularly.
The brake fluid tends to absorb water from the air, causing it to drop its boiling temperature and thus making the brake disc easier to overheat. Because of this, it is recommended to completely drain and replace the brake fluid in your Maxima at least once every 2 years. But if your sedan starts to exhibit signs of tainted brake fluid, such as brakes locking to one side or a pulsating brake pedal for example, don't hesitate to replace it as soon as you can.
- Check for leaks.
Brake fluid runs on a sealed circuit inside your Maxima, so it's not usual for it to diminish in a year or two. So if you find yourself refilling the brake fluid a lot, you may have a leakage on your hands. Check the brake lines as well as the calipers for signs of leaks, including cracks on the surface as well, dried fluid crust on the hose, and pools of brake fluid on the floor. Once you identified the source of the leak, have it patched up or replaced as necessary.
- Clean dirty disc surfaces with brake cleaner.
The surface of the brake disc can accumulate dirt and brake dust over time, and if not removed this can cause the pads to slip and the brakes to lose their effectiveness. However, brake discs cannot be cleaned with regular detergents either, as this can damage the disc and cause the pads to slip even further. Instead, you will need to use a specially-formulated brake cleaner spray. Often sold in auto parts and hardware stores, spray the brake cleaner liberally onto the disc and let it dry. Make sure to have an oil pan or a similar container at the bottom to catch any dripping cleaning fluid.
Did the rotor get warped from overheating? Or are you switching to a performance disc brake set? Either way, installing a brand new brake disc on the Nissan Maxima can be quite a harrowing experience especially for beginners. And the concern does hold some water, as an improperly mounted brake disc may not function properly or not at all. Even worse, it may even damage surrounding disc brake components. If you are installing a Nissan Maxima brake disc on your own, make sure to follow the instructions carefully. In this guide, we've also listed some tips that further make the process easier.
Tip #1: Turn the steering wheel all the way to one side.
Before you lift the wheels off the ground, we recommend turning the wheels sharply to one side. Doing so will give you better access to the brake pad components as opposed to having the wheels in a straight position. Keep in mind though that this will only work if you are working on one wheel at a time.
In addition, we recommend loosening (but not removing) the lug nuts of the hub first before raising the wheel. You'll require less effort to unscrew the nuts loose while the wheels are still on the ground.
Tip #2: Prep the discs with brake cleaner.
Aside from dust, brand new brake discs may also have a coating of chemicals left over from the manufacturing process that may contaminate the pads. Clear this up by spraying the disc surface with an even coat of brake cleaner spray and letting it dry. Be sure to catch any drips with an oil pan and wear a respirator to avoid inhaling the fumes from the cleaner.
Tip #3: Secure the caliper pistons with channel locks.
The discs are held in place by a pair of caliper pistons which can prove difficult to get out of the way. To make it easier, take a pair of channel locks and squeeze the pistons out. You can also try spraying the pistons with a bit of WD-40 if it still doesn't budge. Once the pistons have retracted, tighten the bleeder and place a clean oil pan underneath the brake caliper to catch drips of brake fluid.
What are the advantages of Nissan Maxima brake discs over brake drums?
A drum brake is an older technology that makes use of a set of pads that press against a rotating brake drum. It is still used in some heavy duty trucks, dirt bikes, and ATVs. This is because brake drums need to be large in order to be effective. For the Nissan Maxima, however, a disc brake is used because it copes with the massive forces involved in braking and dissipates heat effectively even if it's small. Drums are also prone to trapping worn lining material within the assembly, which causes braking problems.
What is disc scarring, and how can it affect a brake disc's performance?
Scarring is a brake disc problem that is associated with the brake pads. It can occur if brake pads are not changed promptly when they are worn out. Once enough of the friction material on the brake pad has worn away, it means it's the end of its service life. When this happens, the pad's steel backing plate or the pad retainer rivets will scratch the disc's surface and cause "scarring." A moderately scarred disc can still be usable with new brake pads, but if the scarring goes deep into the body of the disc, then some machining is required to even out the surface.
What is the minimum legally accepted rated thickness of a brake disc?
Machining a brake disc to even the surface out can only be done a number of times on a brake disc as it must meet legal requirements for the minimum rated safe thickness. This rating is usually etched on the hub of the disc. In Pennsylvania, a brake disc will not pass a safety inspection if any scarring is deeper than 0.38 mm. The disc must be replaced if the damage is deeper than the allowed minimum thickness.
