Easy Maintenance Tips to Keep your Jeep Cherokee Brake Disc Running for a Long Time
The brake discs are among the most vulnerable parts of the Jeep Cherokee when it comes to wear, so it is important that these key brake parts are well-maintained. A worn brake disc is highly likely to malfunction, which is something you don't want when driving at high speeds. To prevent that from happening, here are some ways on how you can maintain the Jeep Cherokee brake disc:
- Don't be too harsh on the brakes.
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to keep the brake disc in your Jeep in good condition is by being gentle on the brakes. Sudden, hard braking can cause the brake disc and the brake pads to overheat, which in turn can lead to other brake-related ills including a pulsating brake pedal to cracked and crystallized brake discs.
- Make sure that the brake fluid levels are OK.
A dip in the brake fluid level, often caused by a leak somewhere along the lines, can cause the caliper to become stuck and bit hard on the brake disc, damaging its surface in the process. So if you notice that the brake fluid in your Jeep is low, check the brake lines and the caliper for signs of leaks before refilling it with a fresh batch.
- Don't forget to replace them regularly as well.
Ideally, hydraulic brake fluid should be replaced every two years. This is because brake fluid has the tendency to absorb moisture from the air, lowering its boiling point and making the brake fluid, the brake discs, and the brake pads susceptible to overheating. Also, if the fluid has been contaminated with rust, dirt, and other particulates, it must be drained off and replenished as soon as possible.
- Clean dirty discs with brake cleaner.
While a bit of brake dust and dirt on the brake disc is normal and wont hamper its operation, too much of it will. So once there is a sufficient buildup on and around the brake disc surface, clean it off with commercial brake cleaner. In a well ventilated area, spray a liberal amount of the cleaner directly onto the brake disc and let it dry on its own. The cleaning solution should be able to dissolve most impurities on the disc surface.
Jeep Cherokee brake disc problems are a dime a dozen, and knowing which of these and how these problems affects your car is essential in making the necessary repairs. To help you out, here are several troubleshooting tips you can use for the Jeep Cherokee brake disc:
Steering wheel vibration
If the steering wheels start to vibrate violently whenever you press on the brake pedal, it may be caused by something preventing the brake pads engaging the brake disc properly. First, rule out a stuck brake caliper by checking if the brake fluid is at optimum levels and inspecting the caliper for any stuck pistons. If these appear to be in good condition, check the brake disc itself for any pits, cracks, and other types of damage. Depending on the severity, a damaged brake disc may need to be machined or replaced.
“Blue” discs
Has the discs in your Jeep gained a bright shade of blue? It's likely caused by overheating. Sudden hard stops and imbalance in the brake system can heat up the discs pretty fast, resulting with that distinctive blue hue on the surface.
Once the discs have started to turn blue, try easing the pressure on the brake pedal to reduce heat on the brakes. You should also check if the disc thickness is correct and that the caliper should be checked for proper adjustment and clearance. Keep in mind that while a blue coloration does not affect the disc's performance, the constant high heat that causes this condition can cause the disc to crack or even crystallize.
Strange noises from the brakes
If you start to hear weird sounds every time you step on the brakes, try to determine what type of sound it is. If it is a squealing or a screeching sound, check the condition of the brake pads to see if it is already worn out. If the pads are in good condition, check if the anti-rattle clips of the brake calipers are loose of damaged. On the other hand, if you hear a grinding sound, take the vehicle to the shop and have the disc checked for scraps or cuts.
