Ford Taurus Brake Disc Care and Maintenance Tips
Because it relies on friction to work, the brake disc is expected to wear and tear over time, thus replacement is necessary. But how long before you change the discs on your car depends largely on how well these are maintained. And in this guide, we will share with you some tips on how to care for and maintain the Ford Taurus brake disc.
- Avoid braking too hard.
One of the simplest ways you can extend the service life of the brake disc is by being gentle on the brake pedal. Hard, sudden braking can cause both the brake disc and brake pads to overheat, which in turn can lead to a handful of brake-related problems including a pulsating brake pedal to “blued” discs. If overheating occurs often, the brake disc can warp or crack.
- Clean up any impurities with brake cleaner.
Dirt, mud, and excessive brake dust can prevent the brake disc from engaging properly with the brake pads, resulting in a weaker braking profile. But washing the disc clean with soap and water will do more harm than good. Instead, you will need to use brake cleaner to wash the disc. Often sold in spray cans, brake cleaner is specially designed to remove contaminants from the disc without making it slippery or drying it out.
To clean the disc, simply spray the cleaner directly on the surface. You can choose to either let the disc dry on its own or wipe it off with a clean cloth. Make sure to wear some protective gloves and a respirator when you spray, as brake cleaner contains toxic chemicals that are harmful if inhaled or touched with bare hands.
- Switch to ceramic or NAO brake pads.
Your car's brake pads can also affect the service life of the brake discs. Metallic brake pads, which typically come in stock with the Ford Taurus, tend to be harsh on the brake disc surface. On the other hand, ceramic or non-asbestos organic (NAO) brake pads do less damage to the disc surface as well as provide a quieter operation. These pads do tend to cost much more than metallic brake pads, however, but they are a better choice in the long run.
Whether it is to replace a warped disc or you are switching to a performance-grade rotor, replacing the brake discs of the Ford Taurus can be quite a pain. But as difficult as it is, it is important that the car has a working set of brake discs to ensure safety on the road. The following are some helpful tips on installing a Ford Taurus brake disc:
Tip #1: Drain out the brake fluid before starting.
Replacing the brake disc will be a lot messier if there is still hydraulic brake fluid circulating along the brake lines. What's more, draining the brakes will also help prevent air from being trapped in the brake lines, which can lead to a spongy feel at the brake pedal.
The brake caliper of the Ford Taurus normally has a bleeder valve which you can unscrew to let the brake fluid out. Drain the fluid into a clean oil pan or a similar contain and dispose of it properly.
Tip #2: Check the new disc for any imperfections.
Take the disc out from its packaging and spray it with brake cleaner to remove any dust and grease from the surface. Once it dries, check for scratches, cuts, or any damage on the surface. Also, check if the surface is level and there are no bumps or recesses. Even the slightest imperfection on the disc can result in decreased performance as well as damage to the brake pads and caliper.
Tip #3: Bed in the new disc.
Once the new brake discs have been mounted into place, it's now time to “bed” them in. Bedding or breaking in the brake disc removes the protective coating of the disc and adds a layer of brake dust that helps the brake pad grip the disc more effectively. In addition, breaking in the discs will also help you catch any installation errors and other problems before you actually take the car out for a spin.
How you bed in your new brake disc depends on its manufacturer, so make sure to refer to the disc's packaging for specific bedding instructions. In most cases, you will need to drive the car for half a mile at speeds of 35-50 MPH while making moderate braking along the way. Make sure to do this in an empty area such as a parking lot or a secluded road to avoid accidents.
