But while the Ford Mustang brake disc is one of the best in the automotive industry in terms of quality, it still does need maintenance from time to time to minimize wear. In this guide, we'll share some key tips on how to maintain your Ford Mustang's brake disc.
The easiest and most effective way to keep the brake discs in top condition is regular checkups of the brake fluid levels. Brake fluid levels gradually lower over time due to evaporation, although this can be worsened by leaks in the system. If you notice brake fluid starts to dip below their recommended levels, make sure to refill it as soon as possible.
In addition to fluid levels, you should also check the brake fluid for contamination. Brake fluid should normally have a clear, yellowish tinge; if it starts to acquire a cloudy appearance, it may have been contaminated with water or condensation. When this occurs, bleed the brakes immediately, as contaminated brake fluid can damage the brake's master cylinder.
Brake discs can build up brake dust and dirt over time, reducing their effectiveness, but these can usually be cleared up with brake disc cleaner. Simply spray the cleaner directly onto the surface of the disc, let it soak for several minutes, and wipe dry with a clean cloth. You may have to repeat the process several times in order to completely remove the contaminants on the brake disc surface. Make sure the brake disc has sufficiently cooled first; however, as the hot surface of the disc can cause the brake cleaner fluid to spontaneously combust, releasing chemicals that can be dangerous when inhaled.
If you are currently using semi-metallic brake pads, switching to ceramic or non-asbestos organic (NAO) brake pads might boost the service life of the brake disc. This is because ceramic and NAO pads are gentler on the disc surface, reducing wear as well as brake dust residue. In addition, ceramic pads also tend to be quieter than their semi-metallic counterparts. The only downside is that these two pad variants are more expensive, although it given its benefits it might be more cost effective in the long run.
The brake discs are one of the components of the Ford Mustang that it cannot work without. Together with the brake pads, the brake disc provides effective, accurate braking even at high speeds. So when it starts to malfunction due to wear, damage, or defects, it has to be repair or, in most cases, replaced by a new one.
Replacing the Ford Mustang brake disc is a task that is best done by a professional, but it is possible to do it by yourself if you have the tools, the skills, and the time on hand. In this guide, we'll share some tips you can use when installing the disc to your muscle car.
Tip #1: Loosen the wheel's lug nuts first before lifting the vehicle.
Raising the wheels is essential in removing the brake disc from your Mustang, but before doing so we recommend loosening the lug nuts first. Removing the lug nuts is easier while the wheels are on the ground, although make sure not to loosen it all the way and remove the nuts completely.
Tip #2: Once detached, secure the brake caliper to prevent damaging the brake line.
Letting the loose brake caliper dangle from the brake lines is likely to tear the hose due to the caliper's substantial weight, resulting in brake fluid leaks and necessitate replacement of the brake lines. You can either tie the detached brake caliper and hose to the chassis using a piece of string or a plastic tie, or place it on a box or stool. Make sure to place a clean oil pan underneath the caliper as well to catch brake fluid dripping from the hose.
Tip #3: Spray the new brake disc with brake cleaner.
Although it may look pristine at first glance, but your new brake is likely to be contaminated with grease, dust, and dirt during the manufacturing and shipping process. So before installing the disc, clean it first by spraying it the entire disc surface with brake cleaner and wipe it with a clean cloth. Make sure to do this in a well-ventilated area, as brake cleaner contains chemicals that are dangerous when inhaled in significant doses.
Regarding the strength of biting force and the ability to stop the car in minutes, a multi-piston disc brake offers better performance. However, a lot of people still prefer the single-piston type because it's easier to clean and maintain. Installation is also way easier because it has fewer parts compared to the six or more pistons of the multi-piston disc brake.
The drum brake was invented in the early 20th century. It was used in the early Mustang models from 1965 to 1973. Simply put, the drum brake is a very old braking technology. It uses a mechanism that starts when the driver steps on the brake pedal. Hydraulic pressure is produced from the master cylinder, and this is used by the wheel cylinder to push the pistons in an outward motion. The pistons then come in contact with the C-shaped shoes. The friction produced between them stops the car from moving. This brake system is way more complex than the brake disc because it involves a lot of parts. Its brake force is also low. To address the problem, Ford applied the disc brakes in its succeeding Mustang models. This technology utilizes caliper pistons that transfer the fluid pressure to the pads and rotors to stop the vehicle. This works way faster for a more secure driving experience.
Stainless steel disc brakes and pistons are expected to perform better in a Ford Mustang. These are 100% corrosion resistant. Chromed disc brakes are relatively the same; they are also made from durable and anti-corrosion metals. However, the chrome plating chips and flakes over time and because of that, leaks become common.
