A hands-on inspection remains the best way to ensure that the brake discs in your truck are running on good condition. Common brake disc problems such as warping, pitting, and scoring on the disc surface can easily be identified. In addition, be on the lookout for strange squealing or grinding noises when braking. Aside from worn brake pads, these unusual noises may indicate a problem with the discs as well.
- Avoid making sudden, excessive braking.
This will make the brake discs overheat, causing the brake pedal to pulsate (i.e. go up and down) and damage both the discs and the brake pad. If you will be driving under conditions that require constant braking, such as in urban areas with heavy traffic, try to ease up on the gas pedal so you won't stress the brakes too much.
- Clean the brake disc with a disc brake cleaner.
