Pointers in Maintaining the Chrysler 300 Brake Disc
The brake discs mounted at the front of your Chrysler 300 are critical part of its braking system. So much so, that if the brake disc fails, driving the SUV would become very unsafe. This is why it is important to conduct regular cleaning and maintenance of the brake discs and pads. Below are some tips on how to maintain the Chrysler 300 brake disc.
- Replace brake pads once they wear out.
The brake pads are devices that literally push themselves into the brake disc, creating friction necessary to slow down the wheels. So it's not a surprise that these pads will eventually wear out. And when they do, a worn brake pad may cause damage to the brake disc surface.
When a brake disc should be replaced depends largely on the model and the brand, so make sure to check the information on the packaging or on the brake pad manufacturer's website.
- Check the disc for any signs of damage.
Once the caliper is away from the disc, remove any glaze from the surface by rubbing fine grain sandpaper on the surface in a swirling motion. Once it's clean, check for grooves, cuts, and pits on the disc. Minor or superficial of the disc surface may still be remedied by resurfacing the disc, but if the damage is extensive then replacement is necessary.
- Clean up excess dirt and dust with brake cleaner.
While a bit of dirt and brake dust won't harm the brake disc, too much of it can prevent the brake pads from engaging the disc properly. Even worse, the particles may scratch and score the disc surface. To prevent this, it is recommended to clean both the disc and the brake pads with brake cleaner once they get visibly dirty. Usually sold in a spray bottle in hardware and auto parts stores, brake cleaner is designed to remove any impurities from the brake disc and pads without drying them out or making them slippery.
In a well ventilated area, spray a liberal amount of brake cleaner onto the disc and pads and let it dry out or wipe with a clean, lint-free cloth. Make sure to wear gloves while doing so, as brake cleaner contains toxic chemicals.
Replacing the brake discs of the Chrysler 300 may seem daunting if you are doing it for the first time, but the process is actually quite straightforward especially if you already have all the necessary tools on hand. And if you are installing a Chrysler 300 brake disc set in your garage, here are some tips that you might find quite helpful:
Tip #1: Make sure the wheels are secured.
The wheels need to be completely lifted off the ground in order to remove the brakes, so make sure the vehicle is parked on a stable surface to avoid accidents. If you do not have a floor jack or a breaker bar that fits the lug nuts of your wheel, use a scissor jack and tire iron that came with your vehicle. Once the jack has raised the wheel, place a jack stand under the jack points specified in the manual for support. Don't use the jack to keep the axle up while you work, as it is not designed for prolonged use and may loosen under the weight.
Tip #2: Start with one wheel at a time.
If you will be replacing more than one brake disc and brake pad, we suggest working on one wheel at a time. This would make cleanup and finding parts far easier to do. Also, you can turn the steering wheel all the way to one side to make it easier to access the brakes on the axle.
Tip #3: Use a C-clamp to compress the piston.
If the brake pads or disc are severely worn, the pistons of the brake caliper may rest in a more “closed” position and may not fit over the larger thickness of the new pads. When this happens, use a C-clamp to compress the piston back to a fully open position. You can also use a vise grip or a similar tool, but a C-clamp offers a more secure hold. Also, keep in mind that compressing the piston will force some of the brake fluid in the lines back into the master cylinder, so keep an oil pan at the ready to catch any drips.
